A PATCHWORK quilt created in memory of those lost to su***de is going on display in Tameside

Speak Their Name is a Greater Manchester su***de memorial quilt made of 54 unique squares, each one lovingly created by someone bereaved by su***de.

It will be on display at Ashton Library, not only in remembrance to everyone lost to su***de, but also to raise awareness of the impact of su***de and the benefits of peer support and creative activities.

Workshops, activities and information stands are running alongside the exhibition to highlight mental health, bereavement and peer support as well as other support services available in Tameside.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Public Health Cllr Tafheen Sharif said: “The quilt helps to highlight the human stories and personal impact of su***de. It’s powerful and poignant, and I hope it will help people to reflect on their own lives, loved ones and their mental health and wellbeing.

“I encourage people to come along to see the quilt but also think about getting involved in the drop in sessions that run alongside it and investigate the support available to them and their friends and families.”

The exhibition, organised by Tameside Council as part of the Greater Manchester ‘Shining a Light on Su***de’ campaign, runs from 4 to 15 November 2024.

There's a robin on my fence today,
A feather by my feet
A heart-shaped leaf that blows along
Beside me down the street

Your song played on the radio
This morning in the car
And just last night I could've sworn
I saw a shooting star

The sun and rain are dancing
Making rainbows in the sky
And on the slightest breeze I watch
A butterfly go by

And people might say these are not
The signs I know they are
That it is just coincidence
Your song played in the car

That it is just the sky
And it is just the birds and breeze
A little windy weather
And the nature of the trees

But there is nothing little
About the way they make me feel
The sense of peace they carry
Is both comforting and real

Because it's just one song
And just one butterfly and bird
Just one star and just one leaf
In one enormous world

And so the probability
Of noticing it all
Is close to nearly nothing;
Almost infinitely small

And that is how I know
That when that leaf floats into view
It isn't a coincidence,
But a sign of love from you

So keep on shooting stars to me,
Keep playing me your song
Whilst you dance atop the rainbows
And blow heart-shaped leaves along

Yes, keep on sending signs my love
I'll always look around
For your butterflies on breezes
And your feathers on the ground

I walked through a bed of roses
to bring a bunch to you.
Did you know that in heaven
we had so many flowers too?

I put some on my favourite cloud
and told it where to go,
in the hope that fallen seeds
would give you strength to grow.

Before i sent them down,
i gave each one a little kiss,
to remind you i am still here
and i want to tell you this.

Tomorrow is not promised
and yesterday has gone.
Our time on earth is precious
and never very long.

Spend your moments wisely.
Spread the seeds of love around.
Listen to the silence
as it has the loudest sound.

Keep me alive in memories.
Please live today for me.
When you locked me in your heart,
i threw away the key.

Today, August 30th, is National Grief Awareness Day…

Why do I write so much about grief?
Because, like love, grief is the one thing we will all know in this life.
We will all grieve, we probably are all grieving in some way, right now.
To love is to grieve. To live is to lose.
And yet there is still stigma and silence around those ‘stuck’ in their new world of grief.
We usher and rush them along to join back in with the rat-race of life.

But they do not need reminders of their struggling, they already know.

They need to hear others talking about grief, see others sharing their stories and feel safe to grieve wherever they are.

They need more light on the darkest areas of this life, we all do.

To love is to grieve, to live is to lose, so let’s stop whispering and shunning those in pain and start asking the questions and mentioning lost loved ones names without ‘fear’ of the reaction.

They can’t hurt more. That is already happening.

But they can hurt less, and time is not the sole healer we think it to be.

Time creates a capacity to process and accept yes… but it’s the talking that heals, the sharing that strengthens and the ‘using love as the lead’, that lets joy come back on in…

And that’s why I have chosen this piece today… love came first.

Wishing Eddy Inglis well in his retirement from Willow Wood Hospice, from all the staff at The Green Funeral Services xx

It’s the end of an era for both Willow Wood Hospice and for Eddy Inglis as he retires after 14 years of dedication in his role of Hospice Chaplin.
Staff and volunteers gathered at the hospice to pay tribute to Eddy and thank him for his service and friendship and presented him with cards and gifts.
In a moving tribute to Eddy, Karen Houlston, Hospice CEO said, “ Eddy was more than a Chaplin, he supported patients, their families and hospice staff and volunteers. He had the ability of putting people at ease with his kindness, compassion and wonderful sense of humour. It has been my privilege to work with him all these years.”
Eddy has led hospice remembrance services including Light up a Life and most recently the beautiful Butterfly Memory Release which took place on 8th July in the hospice gardens.
There was laughter as well as tears when Eddy responded with an entertaining speech, thanking the staff and volunteers for their friendship over the years and praising the vital work of Willow Wood Hospice.
