🌿 What is a Humanist Funeral? 🌿

A humanist funeral, otherwise known as celebration of life, is a non-religious ceremony that celebrates a person’s life, values, and legacy in a personal and meaningful way. It focuses on the individual—who they were, the relationships they nurtured, and the impact they had.

These services are ideal for those who lived without religious affiliation or who would prefer a celebration rooted in shared memories rather than spiritual doctrine.

✨ What to expect:
A ceremony shaped around the person’s life story.
Readings, music, and tributes chosen to reflect their personality and values.
A tone that can be solemn, uplifting, or a mix—depending on what feels right for the family.
Humanist funerals are led by trained celebrants who work closely with loved ones to create a service that truly honors the person who has died—without relying on religious content.

If you’re looking for a sincere, respectful, and deeply personal way to say goodbye, a humanist funeral may be the right choice.

Please feel free to reach out or comment below if you’d like to learn more or talk about what’s possible.

When It Matters Most, Choose a Team That Truly Cares.

At Middleton's Funeral Services, we believe that when you're saying goodbye to a loved one, you deserve compassion, continuity, and care — from familiar, trusted faces.
We’re proud to be the only truly independent funeral directors in Middleton, and that independence means something important:
✨ We’ll never pass you to a third-party company. From the first phone call to the day of the funeral and beyond, you’ll deal with the same small, dedicated team — people who genuinely know you and care about your family.
✨ We’re an active part of this community, not just working in it — and we treat every family we serve like an extension of our own.

When you choose us, you’re not just choosing a service — you’re choosing people who walk beside you every step of the way.
If you ever need us, we’re here — always.

🕊️ A Message of Support and Hope

As a funeral service, we witness the pain that alcohol addiction can cause far too often. The impact it has on individuals, families, and entire communities is deeply felt — and tragically, sometimes it's felt too late.
That’s why we want to share the news that a new Alcoholics Anonymous meeting has recently opened in our local area. Alcoholics Anonymous has been helping people recover from alcohol dependency for nearly 90 years, with peer-led support that has changed millions of lives around the world. These meetings offer a safe, confidential, and supportive space for anyone struggling with alcohol — no judgment, no pressure, just people who understand.

If you or someone you care about is looking for help, please know support is available.
🗓️ Every Friday from 12th September 2025 (7:30pm - 9:00pm)

Grief can feel overwhelming — but you don’t have to face it alone.
Middleton's Funeral Services is offering a free group grief support session for anyone who has experienced loss. Whether your loss is recent or years past, we welcome you to join a safe, compassionate space to share, listen, and heal together. Our next grief support meeting will be on Tuesday 9th September at 6PM, hosted at As One Wellness Centre, Middleton. This session is open to the entire community — not just families we’ve served. Everyone deserves support.

Here is a testimonial from our last session:
"I attended the grief support session this afternoon and I was made to feel so welcome. A lovely group of people were there, all of us with different stories and at varying lengths of time through our losses. I definitely feel better for having gone, shared some of my story and feeling supported and understood. Thank you x"

We’d like to sincerely thank those who joined our last session — your bravery in showing up and opening your hearts was deeply moving. You remind us all how healing begins with connection.

"What should I wear to a funeral?"

Traditionally, wearing black or dark clothing is a way of showing respect and mourning. It’s still the most common choice — smart, subdued, and understated.
While black is still traditional, many families now choose something more personal and meaningful to them.

💙 Some families choose a particular colour – often a favourite of their loved one, or a colour of their favourite sports team.
💛 Others encourage bright clothing to reflect a life well lived, rather than a purely sombre occasion.
🧥 And sometimes, the message is simply: “Come as you are.”

The most important thing is always to respect the wishes of the family. If there’s a dress code, it’s usually shared in the funeral notice or by word of mouth — but if you’re unsure, it’s perfectly okay to ask.

Whatever you wear, what matters most is your presence, your support, and the care you bring by showing up.

If you ever have questions like this or feel unsure about any part of a funeral, please don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re always here to help.

What colours or themes have you opted for at your loved ones funeral?

💬 “What should I expect when I visit your funeral home?”
It’s a question we’re often asked — and one we completely understand.

Whether you’re coming in to make arrangements, visit a loved one in our Chapel of Rest, or simply ask some questions, we know it can feel daunting.

At Middleton’s Funeral Services, we’re here to make things as gentle and straightforward as possible.

🤝 From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by a member of our team.
☕ You’ll find a quiet, comfortable space where you can take your time.
🕊️ Our Chapels of Rest offer privacy, peace, and dignity for those special moments with a loved one.
📝 And when it comes to making arrangements, there’s no pressure — just kind, clear guidance every step of the way.

We’re not here to sell anything. We’re here to support you in fulfilling your loved ones wishes, with the same care we’d want for our own family.

📍 If you’ve never visited us before and want to know more, feel free to pop in to our Middleton centre branch, or give us a call on 0161 204 7884. We’re always happy to talk, even if you’re not sure what you need just yet.

"How do I begin to grieve?"

There’s no map for this. Grief doesn’t follow a schedule or a straight line. Sometimes it starts with numbness. Sometimes with tears. Other times, it doesn’t show up until you’re doing the dishes weeks later.

If you’re asking how to begin, maybe just start here: by acknowledging that something has changed, something that mattered deeply. That you’re hurting. That you miss someone, or something, or some version of your life that’s no longer here.

There is no right way to grieve. No timeline. No rules. You might feel everything at once or nothing at all. Both are okay.

Be gentle with yourself. Talk if you can. Rest when you need. Cry when it comes. There’s no prize for being strong—just the quiet courage of surviving each moment.

Our support session may help you make a start.

At Middleton's Funeral Services, we believe every life is unique—and every farewell should be, too.

No two people are the same, and neither are the ways we honor them. That’s why we take the time to listen carefully to each family, helping create services that reflect their loved one’s personality, values, traditions, and story.

Whether it's a quiet gathering or a larger celebration of life, religious or secular, traditional or unconventional—we’re here to guide you through the process with compassion and respect, every step of the way.

This isn’t just what we do. It’s who we are.

If you have questions or want to explore options, we’re always here to talk—without pressure and without obligation.
