Did you know that pain is not an accurate representation of what is happening in our bodies?
It is a protective mechanism of our brain and nervous system. It is there to help protect us from harm.
However, it is not exact and the external stimuli we encounter is filtered through our brains with all of our emotions, expectations and beliefs.
When pain persists for a long time and becomes chronic, it is usually because our brains have become over-protective. They have become accustomed to protecting us and got stuck in a loop, detecting threats where they no longer exist in an attempt to keep us safe.
This is why calming the nervous system is so important in treating chronic pain. When we feel safe, when our nervous systems are calm and we are not in fight or flight mode anymore, we can interupt this overprotective cycle and actually begin to heal 💚
