This new paper breaks down what we do and still don’t know about how young children with autism navigate emotions, and how parents support them along the way.

It introduces a fresh framework showing how autism-specific challenges can affect parent-child emotional interactions, sometimes making it harder to build coping strategies together.

This perspective could shape future research and improve clinical support for families

New research carried out by the University of East Anglia in the UK has found that infants who get diagnosed with autism at a later stage, often present with sensory differences that impact on sleep during infancy.

Babies with an increased likelihood of autism may struggle to settle into deep, restorative sleep, according to a new study from the University of East Anglia.

This article highlights how autism often presents differently in girls in comparison to boys.

https://childmind.org/article/autistic-girls-overlooked-undiagnosed-autism/

Girls with autism often go undiagnosed because they don’t fit autism stereotypes and may mask symptoms better than boys do. Many more boys than girls are diagnosed on the autism spectrum: more than four boys for every autistic girl.

This new study found that anxiety in autistic adolescents may be influenced more by how they interpret their body’s signals than how accurately they detect them. Distressing beliefs about these signals were strongly linked to anxiety.

💙 World Autism Awareness Day 💙

What if everyday sights, sounds, or touch felt overwhelming—or not noticeable at all?

For many autistic individuals, sensory processing differences are a core part of how they experience the world.

In her latest blog 'The Sensory Side of Autism', Dr Lelanie Brewer explores these experiences and why understanding them is key to creating truly inclusive environments.

✨ A must-read for anyone supporting autistic children and adults.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day 💙

Autism is often understood through communication and behaviour however sensory processing is just as important.

Many autistic individuals experience the world differently through their senses. Sounds may feel overwhelming, lights can be too bright, or clothing uncomfortable. Others may seek out sensory input like spinning, deep pressure, or rhythmic movement to help regulate and feel safe or have difficulty with discriminating sensory input.

These sensory differences play a big role in how individuals experience and respond to the world around them.

When we recognise the role of sensory processing, we can move beyond awareness to understanding:

✨ Creating sensory inclusive environments
✨ Supporting regulation, not compliance
✨ Listening to lived experiences

Because inclusion starts with understanding how each person experiences their world.

Camouflaging also known as masking may represent a significant barrier to autism diagnosis, yet its role in clinical assessment remains underexplored.

Findings from a mixed-methods study of autistic adults and clinicians indicate broad agreement that camouflaging influences adult autism assessments. While most clinicians report routinely considering camouflaging, fewer autistic adults recall being explicitly asked about it.

Qualitative insights suggest camouflaging shapes diagnostic interpretation, affects self-understanding, and may contribute to the under-recognition of autistic traits by others.

These findings highlight the need for more explicit and systematic consideration of camouflaging within adult autism assessments, alongside greater integration of autistic perspectives to inform clinical practice.
