πŸš‘ Sudden onset of abdominal pain, fever, and nausea, progressively worsening over a period of 6 hours 🚨

Acute Appendicitis in Children

Acute appendicitis is a common and serious condition in children, involving inflammation of the appendix, a small tube attached to the large intestine.

Symptoms: The main symptom is abdominal pain, often starting around the belly button and then moving to the lower right-hand side of the abdomen. Other symptoms can include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fever, and diarrhoea.

Risks: Appendicitis can affect children of any age but is most common between the ages of 10 and 20. Delays in treatment can lead to complications like a ruptured appendix and peritonitis (infection of the abdominal lining).

Treatment: Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the inflamed appendix, known as an appendectomy. Antibiotics may also be administered.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications.

πŸ†˜οΈ Acute airway compromise secondary to Quinsy
πŸš‘ It's a Red code situation in the A&E with a condition like this 🚨

Quinsy, also known as a peritonsillar abscess, is a serious complication of tonsillitis. It involves the formation of an abscess beside the tonsil, leading to throat swelling and potentially acute airway compromise. This condition is particularly severe in children due to their smaller airways.

Common symptoms include severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and noticeable swelling in the throat area.

In severe cases, it can lead to difficulty in breathing, which requires immediate medical attention.
