“It’s really important to look into the symptoms patients are having and ask about their pain”

This week we welcomed clinicians from across oncology and the wider multidisciplinary team for our Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression (MSCC) Study Day.

With patients living longer due to advances in cancer treatment,
the timely diagnosis and management of MSCC is increasingly important.

The day focused on supporting clinicians to recognise early warning signs, understand risk factors and respond quickly to improve patient outcomes.

💬 Dr Jennifer King, Clinical Lead and Consultant in Clinical Oncology, shared her reflections on the day:

“We had a great MSCC study day, with some fantastic speakers across both the morning and afternoon sessions.

The day covered the MSCC pathway and how this has changed following the updated 2023 NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance.

There was a strong focus on the importance of links between hospitals and community teams, as well as recognising red flags and the challenges in diagnosing these patients.

It really highlighted how important it is to look closely at the symptoms patients are experiencing and to ask the right questions about their pain.

We also heard from radiology on spinal cord compression, including grading and the importance of clear, detailed reporting, alongside case-based discussions to bring this into practice.

The afternoon sessions explored rehabilitation and the new acute oncology ambulatory guidelines, and how these align with the 2023 guidance.

It was a fantastic day, and we hope those who joined, including those online, found it valuable.”

Thank you to all our speakers and delegates who contributed to an engaging and impactful day 💡👏
