I speak up to be help others who don’t feel they can have a voice but I also speak up because I’m still not heard, I’m still seen as a threat, I’m still seen as competition, and I’m still treated differently to a man.
Sometimes it’s obvious, other times it’s hidden behind their self proclaimed title of ally or of championing women, whilst secretly using the agenda to promote their own.
Sometimes it’s men, and other times it’s women.
There’s the glass ceilings, the prolonged paths to promotion, the distinct pay gaps and ideas thoughts and opinions being dismissed until they come from a man, and worse still being passed off as their own. The lack of healthcare research, being dismissed due to ‘womens problems’ being expected to have children, or pumped full of side effect inducing drugs and expected to just carry on as normal.
I’ve had it all, it’s exhausting, but if we stop speaking up, we stop change from happening.
This international women’s day, speak up, tell a women you support her, you appreciate her, you see her. Speak up and ask to hear their opinion if they don’t feel they have the space to share theirs, speak up when you see pay gaps, promotion gaps, title gaps. Keep speaking up until we don’t have to any more.
