Last night I taught a beautiful class in Liverpool to a small group of African men living with HIV in my Volunteer role with .
I am frequently touched by the power of these practices to support and transform and even more so when teaching groups who don’t normally get access to yoga.
I truly believe that yoga is for everyone however not everyone is privileged enough to come into contact with it or be able to afford to do it.
It can feel disappointing when we brush up against entitlement and ennui in more affluent yoga settings, and this is the reason I have always tried to prioritise reaching underserved populations.
These men were polite, engaged, respectful and really loved the practice. There is a level of receptivity which I have encountered before in these groups. One man said ‘How have I reached this age and never done this before?!’
The reward in sharing these practices goes far beyond material compensation. And to be able to offer tools to enable self discovery and potential transformation is a huge gift.We all win in these encounters and I hope that the sharing will continue for many years to come!
