This September, organisations across the country will come together to support parents and carers during ICON Week 2025 (22–26 September).

The national campaign shares the important message: β€œBabies cry, you can cope!”

Crying is a normal part of every baby’s development. For many parents, it can feel overwhelming – especially when combined with the pressures of everyday life. ICON Week helps families understand why babies cry, offers practical coping strategies, and highlights the importance of looking after your own mental health.

The ICON message is simple:

β€’ I – Infant crying is normal and will stop

β€’ C – Comfort methods can sometimes soothe your baby

β€’ O – It’s OK to walk away for a few minutes if your baby is safe and the crying feels too much

β€’ N – Never shake or hurt a baby

This year’s theme is about mental health and staying calm. And that applies to everyone – mums, dads, and carers. For men in particular, talking about stress and finding ways to calm down before handling a crying baby can be a big challenge. ICON encourages both men and women to reach out for support, talk to someone they trust, and take breaks when needed.

Coping tips that can help:

β€’ Create a calm space – turn off screens, lower the lights, and reduce noise. This can help both you and your baby feel more settled.

β€’ Plan ahead with the ICON Crying Plan. In the heat of the moment, being told to β€œcalm down” isn’t always helpful. The Crying Plan helps you think in advance about what works for you – whether that’s stepping outside for a breath of fresh air, calling a friend, or listening to music. Having a plan makes it easier to cope when the crying feels too much.

Dr Suzanne Smith, nurse, health visitor and founder of ICON, said: β€œCrying can push any parent to the edge, and it affects men just as much as women. ICON Week is about reassuring families that crying is normal, encouraging parents to care for their own mental health, and showing that support is always available. Taking steps to stay calm – whether that’s using the Crying Plan, reducing stimulation, or reaching out for help – can make all the difference.”

🌍 Today is International FASD Awareness Day 🌍

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong condition that can occur when a baby is exposed to alcohol before birth. It is one of the most common, yet often under-recognised, neurodevelopmental conditions.

πŸ’‘ Did you know?

FASD is estimated to affect 2–4% of the UK population.

It can cause a wide range of challenges, including difficulties with memory, attention, learning, and social communication.

Early recognition, understanding, and support can make a huge difference to quality of life.

FASD is 100% preventable if no alcohol is consumed during pregnancy.

πŸ“Œ For the public:
International FASD Day – National FASD

πŸ’œ Today, we join others around the world in raising awareness of FASD and encouraging greater understanding and support for those affected.

πŸ’™ Patient Participation Group Update πŸ’™

Thank you to everyone who came along to our PPG meeting on 28th August – your feedback and ideas really do help us shape the way we deliver care at Chorlton Family Practice. πŸ™Œ

Here are some of the key points we discussed:
✨ Lots of positive feedback about the NHS App – we’ll be planning a support day soon so patients can get help setting it up and using it.
✨ Mixed experiences with PATCHS – we’ve launched a patient survey to collect your feedback and improve how it works for you.
✨ Concerns around repeat prescriptions via pharmacies – we’ll be encouraging patients to order through the NHS App to cut down on wasted medication and help you track your prescriptions.
✨ Reception, staff and community services were also discussed – with improvements already being explored.

βœ… Thank you again for all your contributions – together we can make real improvements for our patients, staff, and community.
