When we're in an anxious, angry or depressed place, our brains prioritise negative thoughts over positive ones. A study found that people who complete a meditation experience fewer negative thoughts in response to viewing negative images afterwards. Still that worried mind and look forward to a reduction in negative thoughts.

Want to become emotionally limber? Five minutes a day of soothing breathing at a rate of 5 to 6 breaths per minute will increase vagal tone. No, I'm not being rude. "Vagal tone" is to do with the vagus nerve which energises or soothes our system. Practicing this soothing, rhythmic breathing has been shown to tone the vagus nerve which makes us better able to switch between energised and calm states. Ups our emotional flexibility in response to the world around us, as it were. Commit to, er, breathe!
