Why do we use the recovery position?

If someone is unconscious but still breathing, the recovery position can literally save their life.

👉 It helps keep the airway clear and open
👉 Stops the tongue falling back and blocking breathing
👉 Lets fluids (like vomit) drain out instead of going into the lungs
👉 Keeps them safe until help arrives

💡 So when should you use it?

➡️ Anytime a person is unconscious, breathing normally, and there’s no suspected spinal injury.

➡️ If a spinal injury is suspected always call 999 and follow the advice they give you.

On my face-to-face first aid course, you’ll also learn other ways to maintain an airway when the recovery position isn’t appropriate. That knowledge could make the difference in a life-or-death situation.

First aid skills are confidence skills. Want to feel confident stepping in if someone collapses?

🚑 How many first aiders does your workplace actually need?

HSE guidance is a good baseline but if you only ever stick to the minimum, you could be leaving big gaps. History, case reviews and stats all back this up!

Think about it…

What happens when your trained first aider is on leave or off sick?

Who covers shifts, large sites, or lone workers?

What about staff who move on or retire, do you lose all that cover overnight?

It’s not just about “we’ve got 10 staff, so we don’t need anyone.” It’s about real people, real risks, and making sure your workplace is genuinely prepared not just technically compliant.

And if you’re a sole trader? You still need a plan.

👉 That’s why I always recommend looking beyond the guidance and thinking wider.

If you’re unsure where to start, I offer a free First Aid Needs Assessment no nonsense or training sales pitch, just a straightforward chat about what’s right for your workplace.

Drop me a message if you’d like to book one in.

🚨 124 workers killed in work-related injuries last year 🚨

This isn’t “health & safety gone mad.”
This is 124 families losing someone who went to work and never came home.

Health & Safety isn’t about clipboards, tick-boxes, or stopping people from living their lives. It’s about preventing fatal injuries making sure people stay safe enough to get back to their families at the end of the day.

⚠️ Knowing how to spot risks, prevent accidents, and act quickly when things go wrong saves lives. That’s why training matters.

👉 At Bee Core Training, I keep it real. No nonsense, no fluff just proper skills that make workplaces safer by knowing first aid and what to do in an emergency situation.

Because nobody should pay the ultimate price for doing their job.

If you are looking for a first aid course or training for your workplace please drop me a message and find out what I can offer you to keep you and your people safe!

💬 What’s the biggest falls challenge you see in your setting?

Every fall has consequences which can be physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially damaging. Yet too often, they get brushed off as “inevitable.” They’re not!

For me, falls and falls prevention have always been a huge passion. It comes from both sides of my background working in sport and physical activity, and working in care.

I’ve seen first-hand how the right support can keep people strong, confident and safe… and I’ve also seen how the wrong approach leaves people at risk. Honestly, I love talking about falls because I’ve watched the system fail people time and time again in the same ways.

Here are 10 common mistakes I see in falls prevention:

1️⃣ Treating falls as ‘normal’ with age
2️⃣ Not asking about previous falls
3️⃣ Ignoring unsafe footwear
4️⃣ Overlooking hazards in the environment (poor lighting, clutter, no grab rails)
5️⃣ Forgetting strength & balance exercise programmes
6️⃣ Over-relying on mobility aids without proper training/follow-up
7️⃣ Skipping medication reviews
8️⃣ Treating the injury but not investigating the cause
9️⃣ Failing to share fall risks between staff, families, and other professionals
🔟 Ignoring the psychological impact (fear of falling again reduces confidence & mobility)

👉 Falls are preventable for many but only if we stop repeating these mistakes.

At Bee Core, my training goes beyond tick-boxing. I help staff build the skills and confidence to actually reduce risks and support people in a way that matters.

Barm? Cob? Bap? Roll? Bun? Teacake?

The thing is: we all accept that different words can exist for the same thing. Nobody’s bread roll gets less “bread-rolly” just because someone else calls it something else.

So why is it so much harder for people to accept pronouns, identities, or the way someone else chooses to describe themselves?

Language is personal, important and ever changing. Respect is free. Acceptance is what makes us stronger whether you’re a barm-cake-eater, a cob-lover, or a bap-believer.

Creating workplaces that truly respect people means more than ticking boxes. If you want to make equity, inclusion, and respect part of your day-to-day culture, I can help with practical training, support, and guidance, so your team feels seen, safe, and valued.

🩹 What should actually be in a first aid kit?
Spoiler: it’s not just plasters and hope.

HSE guidance says there’s no mandatory list and that you should decide based on a First Aid Needs Assessment. I often visit workplaces who have a first aid kit but have never actually thought about what they need in it or why they need it.

A British Standard kit should always be your baseline but you really should be doing a needs assessment to understand what you need. (It's not optional its part of the Health and Safety Executive regulations.)

Your needs assessment might show you need extra items and those extras could be the difference between life saved or lost.

👉 If you’re not sure, I’ll help you out. I’ll complete a First Aid Needs Assessment for free. Drop me a DM or email hello@beecore.co.uk

I was away last week so missed the initial news from the DVSA about the future changes to driving tests.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced a change that the driving test will include new questions on CPR and defibrillators.

I think this is so important and a great step forward to help drive knowledge of CPR and AED use in public.

And although I am really excited to see this development if you compare to some of our European neighbours we are not quite doing enough in my opinion.

If you look at some of the countries below they include or entry requirement to the drivers licence is that hand on practical first aid training has to be completed.

🇨🇭 Switzerland you need to complete 10 hours of practical first aid training before your licence.

🇩🇪 Germany require a first aid course (theory + hands-on) mandatory.

🇦🇹 Austria, 🇸🇮 Slovenia, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇨🇿 Czech Republic require first aid training before you can even sit your test.

Knowing the theory is a start. knowing how to put the theory into action in a confident and calm way well that comes from practical training.

How confident would you be doing first aid in an emergency on the road?

💡 Is Your Workplace Learning Sparking Confidence or Just Keeping the Box Ticked?

Too many teams are still sat through training that feels like a chore, not a chance to grow. Same slides. Same scripts. Same “because it’s always been done that way” approach.

Let’s be honest if the only outcome is a certificate and a sigh of relief, we’ve missed the point of learning.

💡 3 Ways to Make Training Count:

1️⃣ Start with real risks, not recycled slides
Tailor your content to the challenges your team faces today not what someone put in the induction pack in 2004.

2️⃣ Make it relevant and real
Training that doesn’t connect to day-to-day work? Straight out the other ear.
Use examples people recognise, not stock photos and generic “HR speak”.

3️⃣ Focus on confidence, not just compliance
If your team still feels unsure after the training, you haven’t trained them you’ve just told them things.

At Bee Core Training, I don’t do death-by-PowerPoint or trainig for the sake of it because Brenda and Collin decided in 1998 everyone needed this mandatory course. I design and curate practical, inclusive, confidence-building sessions that actually stick that are bespoke for your team and workplace.

💬 Real feedback from real people.

I actually had such a laugh teaching this lot the other week. 3 days with them on a First Aid at Work course and I think I probably laughed more than taught.

The group were all local authority workers from different departments and it was so much fun seeing them all come together and enjoy the course.

What you can see from the feedback is my training is relaxed, neurodiversity friendly and just proper, practical training that leaves you walking out with more confidence than you walked in with.

Whether it’s first aid, manual handling, care sector training, or community workshops I am here to make it matter.

No death by PowerPoint. Plenty of laughs, learning, and useful skills you’ll actually remember.

I learnt something last week that honestly stopped me in my tracks and I can’t believe I didn’t know it already. You can register your phone to text 999 in an emergency if you can’t speak. It's called emergencySMS, and it’s been designed for people who use alternative ways to communicate than sound.

As someone who trains others in emergency response, you’d think I’d have known this… but nope! Proof that we never stop learning and that’s exactly why staying curious, asking questions, and keeping up-to-date really matters.

I’ve now registered for those unthinkable moments whether it’s a medical emergency and I can’t speak, or a situation where talking could put me in danger, I know I can still call for help.

How to register your phone:
1️⃣ Text the word register to 999
2️⃣ You’ll get a reply with instructions
3️⃣ Reply YES to confirm
That’s it you’re set up to text 999 in an emergency Easy to do, takes less than a minute and could literally save your life.

🔗 Here’s the official info from BT:
https://www.relayuk.bt.com/how-to-use-relay-uk/contact-999-using-relay-uk.html

⚠️ Important to know:
Use the emergencySMS service only when you can’t use voice calls, because texting takes longer. It’s a last-resort option, but a vital one.

When texting 999, include:
1️⃣ The service you need: ambulance, police, fire or coastguard
2️⃣ What’s happening – briefly describe the emergency
3️⃣ Where you are – be specific: road name, town, house number, postcode or landmarks

🐝 BEE CORE BONUS TIP:
Don’t assume your team knows about this either. If you work with vulnerable people, non-verbal communicators, lone workers, or in high-risk settings this could be lifesaving. Add it to your induction, team chats, or training. Share it.

Want help embedding this and other practices in your workplace or emergency response training? Give me a shout.

DM me or email hello@beecore.co.uk.
