Melasma is hyperpigmentation primarily on the these are the at home face that is very very sensitive to sun light and estrogen hormones we recommend.
1. Use excellent sun protection! Staying out of the sun in the middle of the day, seeking shade, hats and UV protective clothes are key.
2. For sunscreen, use tinted mineral sunscreen which may filter some of the visible light that triggers Melasma.
3. Want extra sun protection? Consider adding a supplement with Polypodium Leucotomos, which can improve Melasma clearance when added to standard treatments.
4. Azelaic acid is key ingredient to look for to improve Melasma. It can be combined with other helpful ingredients like alpha arbutin, tranexamic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C.
5. Active ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid can help in some instances but beware of irritation. Melasma may worsen in areas of skin that are irritated by harsh skin care ingredients.
6. Audit any hormonal changes. If you’re pregnant, the Melasma will often resolve a few months after pregnancy. If it’s due to birth control pills or IUD then consider talking to your doctor.
7. DON’T jump hastily to laser treatment or chemical peels. These can seem like quick fixes but without the changes above, Melasma will come right back and may even worsen if the skin is irritated.
8. If your doctor prescribed you a triple combo cream with hydroquinone, topical steroid and tretinoin, DON’T use for longer than 3 month intervals. Long term use can lead to skin thinning from the topical steroid, and paradoxical hyperpigmentation from the hydroquinone.
