Early interaction skills in children are crucial for their development. These skills help kids communicate, share, and connect with others, laying the foundation for future relationships. Engaging in play, responding to social cues, and practicing turn-taking are all part of this learning process.

Parents and caregivers can encourage these skills by providing opportunities for social interaction and modeling positive communication behaviors. Fostering these abilities early on can lead to better social competence as they grow.

Every interaction you have with your child is an opportunity to help develop your child's communication skills!

Let’s get rid of the jargon!

We want to make sure you understand as much as possible.
It can be hard when difficult terms/words are used.
Here are some words that you may have heard if you have had a stroke or a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). We want to make sure everybody understands what they mean.

Stroke: the interruption of the blood flow to the brain.
This can be due to a bleed.
It can also be due to a clot.
A stroke can also be called a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)

Aphasia : a communication difficulty usually caused by a stroke or brain injury.
Comprehension, expression, reading and writing can be affected.

Dysphagia: difficulty in swallowing

Dysarthria: difficult or unclear articulation and clarity of speech caused by an impairment in the muscles.

Dyspraxia: a disorder that affects coordination and movement.
Oral and speech (verbal) dyspraxia can occur after a stroke or brain injury.

Hemiparesis: a weakness of the arm, leg and trunk on the same side of the body.

Hemiplegia: paralysis of the arm, leg and trunk on the same side of the body.

Rehabilitation: therapy treatments and education that is used to support recovery after an illness, injury or disease.

Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA): a temporary disruption of the blood supply to the brain.
It causes similar symptoms as in a stroke.
These symptoms usually disappear after a short period of time.

We hope this has helped :-)
