Your back is the most important tool in the shed, but are you taking care of it?
Here are 5 “Spine Savers” for your next garden session:
1️⃣ Long Handles: If you have to slouch to reach the dirt, your tool is too short.
2️⃣ The “Close Carry”: Keep heavy compost bags or plant pots tight to your chest. The further away you hold it, the heavier it hits your lower back.
3️⃣ Knee Pads: Saving your knees actually saves your back by allowing you to get closer to the work without bending over. Or sit on a low stool or bucket.
4️⃣ Switch tasks regularly before your muscles lock up. Break jobs up into manageable chunks and spread tasks across the week
5️⃣ The “20-Minute Rule”: For every 20 minutes you spend leaning forward to plant, spend 20 seconds leaning back with your hands on your hips. It’s called a “compensatory stretch,” and your lumbar spine will literally thank you
