L A Y A

In yogic practice, laya means the dissolution of the restless mind. When union is attained, the movements of thought dissolve into stillness. The breath naturally steadies, and from this quieting arises ānanda — the bliss of resting in one’s own true nature.

This reminds us that yoga is not only about physical postures, but also about the subtle process of calming the mind until it merges with inner peace.

Yesterday – Saturday 6 September – a well-respected Ashtanga yoga teacher was arrested in Parliament Square for holding a piece of paper that said: “I am opposed to genocide – I support Palestine Action.” I was with her as she was dragged off by about eight police officers. Nearly 900 other people were arrested. On the same day, 200,000 people marched in London calling for an immediate ceasefire and to stop arming Israel.

By not speaking out against genocide makes a person complicit in genocide. What is happening in Gaza is genocide. Mass ethnic cleansing. Silence in the face of this contributes to its normalisation. Two months ago a UN commission concluded that Israel is guilty of “exterminating Palestinian life in Gaza.”

As yoga teachers, being ethical means speaking up. This is not optional – it is a necessity. This is a good test of our skilful engagement in this world. How can we raise our voices against this genocide? Integrity means speaking out is not optional; it is a necessity.

E G O

In Buddhist philosophy, the ego is seen as a false sense of self—an illusion created by attachment to identity, thoughts, and desires. This attachment leads to suffering (dukkha) because everything in life is impermanent. When people cling to their ego, they resist change and become trapped in craving and aversion. True peace comes from letting go of the ego, embracing impermanence, and cultivating mindfulness and compassion.

The Buddhist view of ego and suffering aligns with Stoicism, which teaches that attachment to desires and external outcomes leads to distress, and true peace comes from accepting nature’s flow. Similarly, Sufi Islam emphasizes shedding the ego (nafs) to attain spiritual closeness to God. Hinduism’s Advaita Vedanta also sees the ego as an illusion (maya) that causes suffering, advocating self-inquiry to realize one’s true, unchanging essence. Even modern psychology echoes these ideas, suggesting that excessive self-focus leads to anxiety, while mindfulness and detachment foster well-being. Across traditions, freedom from ego is key to inner peace.
