Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is all around us in daily life. Are you familiar with the five flavors in TCM? Sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty—not only do they represent taste, but they are also closely linked to the health of our internal organs.

Sour for the Liver: Sour foods aid digestion, protect the liver, and can help prevent colds, lower blood pressure, and soften blood vessels.

Bitter for the Heart: Bitter foods clear excess heat, dry dampness, and prevent toxin buildup. Examples include bitter melon and lily bulbs.

Sweet for the Spleen: Sweet foods replenish energy, nourish the blood, and detoxify.

Pungent for the Lungs: Spicy foods promote sweating, regulate qi, protect blood vessels, and prevent colds. Common examples include garlic and ginger.

Salty for the Kidneys: Salty foods regulate fluid balance and metabolism, benefiting kidney function. Seaweed and salt are key examples.

These flavors not only enhance food but also support health according to TCM

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a key traditional celebration for the Chinese, 🎈symbolizing their longing for loved ones and the hope for reunion. Eating mooncakes during this time reflects the essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where food and medicine are intertwined.
For example, the five-nut mooncake contains walnuts, almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds, each with unique health benefits:
• Walnut: Strengthens kidneys, enhances brain function, and promotes digestion.🍁
• Almond: Moistens lungs, relieves cough, aids digestion, and lowers cholesterol.
• Peanut: Supports spleen and stomach health, enriches blood, and stops bleeding.
• Sunflower seed: Moistens lungs, reduces phlegm, and lowers blood pressure.
• Sesame seed: Nourishes liver and kidneys, enriches blood, and relieves dryness.
This is how TCM seamlessly integrates into daily life.🍀
Let's celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together with Shulan College of Chinese Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine! Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Do you know the meaning of “Essence (精), Energy (气), and Spirit (神)” in traditional Chinese medicine?🎏

Essence (精), Energy (气), and Spirit (神) are vital components of human life activities. They are interconnected and interact with each other to maintain and regulate human life activities and health status. Essence (精) can be divided into innate kidney essence and acquired essence (obtained through diet and other factors). Essence provides the basic energy; Energy (气) is the driving force of life activities, conducting and maintaining normal physiological functions; and Spirit (神) is the supreme commander of all life activities. It includes activities like soul, consciousness, intention, will, thought, consideration, and wisdom, reflecting a person's health condition through these activities.📿

We always have to maintain good well-being to keep the Essence, Energy, and Spirit at a sufficient level and in good balance between physical, emotional, and mental aspects, thereby maintaining good health, appearance, and a strong immune system.

Join us! Let’s learn to use traditional Chinese medicine to stay healthy!🤗
