We’re all incredibly proud of our Trailblazer Campaigner Lucas 👏🏻💙

It was a privilege to welcome Lucas Vezza-O’Brien to Parliament yesterday for the Parliamentary debate on evacuation chairs in schools.

In November last year, Lucas faced a frightening situation during a small fire at Hyde High School, where Lucas is a pupil. As a wheelchair user, he was told to wait in a refuge area because there was no evacuation chair available. That experience inspired him to launch the campaign, calling for every school to have the right equipment and trained staff so no disabled student is ever left behind in an emergency.

Lucas has already achieved a great deal – securing evacuation chairs and staff training for his Hyde High, and gathering thousands of signatures on his petition. His campaign has sparked a national conversation and, of course, the debate in Parliament yesterday. Lucas will be meeting with the Minister for School Standards to discuss how we can make this a reality across the country.

Christmas can often look a little different for neurodivergent families.
When we focus on what supports autistic young people’s comfort, joy and wellbeing, it’s natural that our celebrations might not look like everyone else’s, and that’s perfectly okay!

For many of us, this time of year can bring more sensory overload, changes in routine, and extra social pressure - and what’s fun for some might be overwhelming for others.

Our article “Surviving The Festive Season” was written in collaboration with autistic young people and shares thoughts and practical ideas to help young people navigate this time: from managing lights, food, and social plans to making space for rest, boundaries, and downtime.

You can find the article on Autism Understood here 👇🏻
