💧 Thirsty Thursday - Nutrition & Hydration Week 💧

Staying well hydrated is especially important in cystic fibrosis. Drinking enough helps keep mucus in your lungs thinner (making airway clearance easier) and supports healthy digestion.

Don’t rely on thirst alone - you may already be dehydrated before you feel it. Aim for pale straw-coloured urine as a sign you’re well hydrated, and most adults with CF need around 2-3 litres a day (check with your CF team for personalised advice).

✨ To celebrate, our lovely dietitians, student dietitian and Pearce Ward chefs teamed together to deliver smoothies to our patients today - a delicious way to boost hydration and nutrition!

Watch out for signs like tiredness, headaches, dizziness, or thicker mucus - these could mean you need more fluids.

🥤 Keep sipping throughout the day and stay ahead of dehydration!

Nutrition & Hydration Week continues… and today it’s Snacky Tuesday! 🍎🥨

Snacks can help keep your energy levels up throughout the day. They’re also a great way to top up on important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre.

Everyone with CF has different nutrition needs. Some people may need higher calorie, higher fat and sugar snacks to help maintain or gain weight - while others may prefer a more balanced approach. Our dietitians are here to help guide what’s right for you.

If you’re at a healthy weight and looking to make heart-healthy, balanced choices, here are some snack ideas combining key food groups:
• 🍏 Fruit & protein boost: Apple slices with nut butter or a small handful of mixed nuts
• 🥕 Veg & healthy dips: Carrot, pepper or cucumber sticks with hummus, or edamame beans
• 🍞 Fibre + dairy combo: Wholemeal toast or rice cakes with soft cheese, or crackers with reduced-fat cheese
• 🥣 Calcium & energy: Low-fat yogurt with fruit, or a small bowl of wholegrain cereal with milk/fortified plant-based alternative

🍰 If you are aiming to gain weight or need extra energy, higher calorie snacks can be really helpful. Ideas include:
• 🍫 Sweet snacks: Chocolate bars, biscuits, doughnuts, Danish pastries, waffles, cakes, scones, fruit pies or individual trifles
• 🧀 Dairy & dessert-style: Cheese and biscuits, yoghurt or chocolate pots
• 🍕 Savoury & meal-style snacks: Sausage rolls, scotch eggs, quiche, sushi or individual pizzas
• 🍞🥜 Simple & energy-dense snacks: Toast, crisps or nuts

In summary, choose snacks that work for you - whether that’s balanced, nutrient-rich options or higher energy choices to support weight gain. Portion size and frequency can be tailored to your individual needs.

This week is Nutrition and Hydration Week, a campaign celebrating the importance of good nutrition and hydration for our health and wellbeing. 💧🥗

To kick off the week, Monday focuses on breakfast – start the week as you do your day! 🌅

"A healthy breakfast is the perfect way to start your day. It can provide essential nutrients, sustained energy and many health benefits, from improved focus to weight management.
Even with a busy schedule, it’s easy to enjoy a quick and healthy breakfast.

Top tips 💡

• A healthy balanced breakfast includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and some protein and limits processed meats, sugary cereals and sugary drinks.

• Eating a healthy balanced breakfast can improve glycaemic control and support weight management as well as lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

• Skipping breakfast means you may miss out on essential nutrients and feel hungrier during the day, causing you to snack on unhealthy foods, which can increase your risk of obesity and related issues.

Healthy breakfast ideas 🥣

• Porridge or overnight oats with milk or a fortified plant-based alternative, fruit, nuts and seeds. 🍓🥜

• Avocado toast with a poached egg or scrambled tofu. 🥑🍳

• Smoothie bowls with blended fruit, yoghurt and low-sugar granola. 🍌🫐

• Wholegrain toast with nut butter or low sugar baked beans. 🍞

• Omelette with spinach, tomatoes or mushrooms, served with wholegrain toast. 🍳🍅🍄

🏃‍♂️ Wow Wow Wow - London Marathon 🏃‍♂️

Very happy to share our own Andy’s story and fundraising link, how he is taking on London Marathon in 7 weeks.

We know a marathon is no easy feat, but Andy we know how much this means to you, how far you have come and what you have been through, and are so proud you are taking on this challenge (just don’t take Dr Green’s advice and run in new trainers on the day 😂)

We are supporting you all the way!
