Rehab isn’t about finding the perfect exercise, it’s about finding a tolerable one and building from there.
The goal isn’t to ‘fix’ anything today. It’s to show the person they can move safely again.
Rehab is about choosing the right input at the right time for the right person, not chasing a magic exercise.

Context > Exercise selection.

▪️Hip Pain ▪️ Working on hip impingement rehab today.

The aim here is to build controlled strength in ranges that don’t provoke symptoms, before progressively challenging end ranges under load. It’s not about “fixing”, it’s about building control, capacity, and confidence in movement.

Rehab is simple. Progress takes patience.

▪️Real-world rehab▪️

Load. Observe. Adjust.
Repeat as needed.

Few bits from this week.

▪️Exercise selection▪️
Two different problems, two different Hatfield variations.
This is a great way to load the body, giving a solid reference point with the hands on the bar enabling greater loading and a feeling of ‘safety’ - very important when trying to reduce pain sensitivity.
Exercise selection in rehab shouldn’t be so much about the ‘pathology’ itself and a lot more to do with building towards the end goal, whatever that might be.
Here we’ve got a back pain issue aiming for full range squatting and an advanced ACL repair aiming for greater single leg strength 🏋🏻‍♂️

▪️ACL Rehab▪️
6 months post op and we’re starting to ramp things up. Change of direction work, deceleration, plyo variants, all the fun stuff.
Not long until we’re back on the ice 🤞🏻 ⛸

▪️Hip Flexor Tendinopathy▪️

Sophie’s having some pain in her hip when moving in to the catch position on the split jerk.
Big comp just around the corner so we’re unloading the jerk position in training to allow the tissue to heel and providing Sophie with some alternative positions to gradually load the tissue and create a level of resilience.

Using Rocktape UK to create some mechanical stimulus to the nervous system and help with symptom relief.

◾️Positions Matter◾️

Here’s Allan, he’s a weightlifter and he’s ridiculously strong 🏋🏻‍♂️
He’s got back pain, not because he’s weak or because his ‘glutes aren’t firing’ or because he ‘doesn’t stretch enough’.

There’s rarely a singular reason as to why we develop pain but certainly in this case his heavily extended lumbar spine when he jerks is probably contributing! Have a look at the last pic 👀

So with these couple of exercises we’re working positions to counter act this and build some tissue tolerance in a more preferential lumbo-pelvic position 👌🏻

◾️Treating the hip to treat the knee!◾️

Toby has been flying with his rehab recently following a long period of knee issues. Recently it flared up for, seemingly, no reason 🤷🏼‍♂️
After some questioning and a decent examination it seems the hip is restricted and weak in certain positions and therefore excessively loading the knee.

Turns out my mum was right, the hip bone is connected to the...knee bone. Pain is complex, and musculoskeletal pain is usually present for a whole host of reasons. The skill to treating issues like this is understanding that there’s never one answer and separating the wood from the trees 🌲
Let’s see what happens over the next few weeks 💪🏻 😃

▪️Making Rehab Count▪️

We’ve been working with Jodie for a while now in relation to issues around her hip and back. These have generally settled well with appropriate rehab and advice around managing training load.

Now we’re looking at some of the finer performance details. The second part of the video shows some early pull on the right and when we tested further there was a deficit in rotation strength and control around the trunk and shoulder.
In the first part of the video is one of the exercises we’re using to help correct it. It’s a means of creating resistance to trunk rotation, isometric contraction through the opposite shoulder girdle and rotation control around the shoulder 👍🏻💪🏻 🏋🏻‍♀️

▪️Results▪️

The two videos show the results of months of hard work. Two individuals who put in a lot of work over a period of at least 12 weeks to rehabilitate themselves back to the point of being able to perform movements like these under heavy load.

Rarely is there a quick fix where injury is involved. We assessed thoroughly at the beginning, formulated a diagnosis, set out some mutually agreed goals and then got to work. Nothing quirky or novel, we adjusted training intensity and volume, worked on weaknesses, gradually graded load back up all while communicating with coaches and here we are now...doing the fun stuff 🏋🏻‍♀️ 💪🏻 😃

▪️Pec Tear▪️

This is what happens when your pec tears! 😭
Noticing the muscle belly ‘bunching’ together when it contracts.

This injury occurred whilst bench pressing. That doesn’t mean bench pressing is bad for you, but maybe bench pressing too heavy, too quickly, with bad technique etc etc, you get the idea!🙄

With an injury of this grade we referred to The Arm Clinic for a surgical opinion and liaised with Daniel Campbell Coaching in relation to post injury training and rehab.

These injuries don’t always require surgical intervention, they can be rehabbed depending on the impact on the patients life and their post injury goals 👍🏻😃
