The Ethnic Health Forum (EHF), alongside members of the Manchester Global Foundation (MGF) research group, attended the 'Genomics Education Event' at the Hyatt Regency, Manchester.

The event explored how genomics is shaping the future of cancer care β€” enabling earlier, fairer, and more personalised diagnosis and treatment β€” through interactive workshops and real-world case studies πŸ”¬

πŸ’¬ A key highlight was the strong focus on PPIE involvement. Lived experiences shared from diagnosis to recovery brought powerful patient perspectives and reinforced the importance of equity and access in genomic testing.

EHF also connected with nhs.uk partners to discuss future engagement activities and collaboration opportunities aimed at supporting inclusive and equitable genomic research.

✨ An insightful and inspiring day of learning, dialogue, and partnership.

🀝 Turning research into real community impact

This week at the Ethnic Health Forum office, we welcomed Dr Munazza Suharwardy Obaid , Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Lancashire and Honorary Staff Member at the The University of Manchester.

We shared ideas on future collaboration and explored how academic insight can be translated into practical, community-led support for ethnic minority communities across Salford and Manchester.

We are the Walkie Talkie Park Buddy Group, and everyone is welcome to join us! 🀝
We are not just a walking group β€” we explore parks across Salford while:
walking πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ
exercising πŸ’ͺ
talking πŸ’¬
..and connecting in English to build vocabulary and overcome conversation shyness in a friendly and supportive space.

People from Urdu, Arabic, and Kurdish-speaking communities 🌍 β€” including mothers and daughters πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§, friends and neighbours β€” all took part and enjoyed the day 😊.

One participant shared:
πŸ—£οΈ β€œOne hour is not enough β€” I want to stay longer, I’m enjoying the time and the company.” ❀️

At Ethnic Health Forum (EHF), we are committed to supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of ethnic minority communities.
This week’s walk at Mandley Park was a beautiful and inspiring gathering ✨.

πŸ’™ Community Engagement & Mental Health

Ethnic Health Forum recently delivered a Community Engagement & Involvement session on Mental Health and family support in Salford, in collaboration with Manchester Global Foundation (MGF), and the Global Mental Health and Cultural Psychiatry team.

The session brought together community members from Arabic, South Asian, and Black African backgrounds β€” including parents and non-parents, refugees, and local residents.
Delivered in Arabic, English, and Urdu, it created a safe and inclusive space to share lived experiences, challenge stigma, and explore how families and communities can support mental wellbeing.

Thank you to everyone who took part and contributed so openly. Community-led conversations like this are vital in reducing health inequalities and shaping culturally appropriate mental health support.

πŸ“’ Our Research Capacity & Capability Programme is back for 2026

EHF staff joined the first Journal Club of the year at the The University of Manchester , led by Professor Nusrat Hussain, Professor of Psychiatry.

The session opened with a powerful presentation by Dr Tarela Ike on art-based interventions addressing gender-based violence, drawing on community-led research from Nigeria.

This sparked a thoughtful and engaging discussion on real-world impact β€” exploring how research, when rooted in lived experience, can inform meaningful change.

πŸ™ Thank you to Professor Nusrat Hussain for his continued guidance, the University of Manchester for hosting, and everyone who contributed to such a rich discussion.

✨ We’re looking forward to a year of shared learning, collaboration, and research with purpose.

Planning with purpose as we step into a new year.

Our EHF team recently came together for a strategic planning session, setting the direction for our next three-year programmes and reflecting on how we can continue to serve our communities with care, inclusion, and impact.

As we look ahead, our focus remains clear: expanding community services, strengthening quality delivery, and ensuring our work leads to real, measurable change for the people we support. At EHF, the belief that no one should be left behind is not just a value β€” it’s the lens through which every decision is made.

When experience meets knowledge and is guided by empathy, meaningful change becomes possible. This planning process is rooted in continuous learning, evaluation, and teamwork, because sustainable progress is always built together.

We are deeply grateful to our funders and partners for their trust and continued support, enabling us to move into this new chapter with clarity, commitment, and shared purpose across Manchester and Salford.

A Heartfelt Farewell at Woodville πŸ‘‹

EHF staff, friends, and colleagues came together at Woodville Family Hub to celebrate Paulina’s retirement and to say a heartfelt goodbye.

The gathering was filled with warmth and appreciation, beautiful speeches, flowers, gifts, and shared memories. There was plenty of laughter- mixed with tearsβ€”as the room overflowed with gratitude, love, and best wishes for the journey ahead.

Paulina’s dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts have made a lasting difference to her colleagues, the families, and the children she supported throughout her career. Her impact on our community will always be remembered.πŸ’™

Thank you, Paulina, from all of us at EHF, for your incredible service and commitment. We wish you a retirement filled with happiness, health, and beautiful new moments. πŸ’

The EHF team took part in a Theory of Change workshop as part of our ongoing team development plan.

The session was delivered by Mr Qadeer, and it encouraged open discussion and brainstorming, with every team member actively contributing ideas.

The team was divided into two groups, competing to design the strongest project while putting the 'Theory of Change' into practice. It was a great example of collaboration, creativity, and shared learning in action.

A big thank you to our trainer and EHF administration for making this valuable learning opportunity possible. Continuous learning and collaboration are key to building a strong, successful team. πŸ’™

Real conversations. Real communities. Real work behind cohesion.

Our EHF staff, alongside a wonderful community member, attended the 'Community Cohesion Conference' in Salford β€” joining partners and local voices committed to strengthening trust, inclusion, and understanding across our city.

Thank you to Salford City Council and the Community Cohesion Team for hosting such a thoughtful and well-run conference, and to everyone who contributed to shaping the Community Cohesion Strategy 2023–2027.

The workshops created space to listen, share lived experiences, and reflect honestly on what cohesion looks like in practice β€” not just in policy.

We left with clear reminders: progress happens when we listen well, work together, and keep community voices at the centre.

πŸ‘‰ Let’s keep building spaces where people feel heard and valued.
