Warmer days can mean more activity, so hydration matters.

In spring, routines often shift: more time outdoors, busier days, and heating turned down. That can make drinking easy to forget, even when someone feels fine.

Small, regular sips usually work better than “drink more” reminders. Keep a favourite mug or bottle within reach, and link drinks to habits that already happen: morning tea, with meals, after a short walk, and with evening medication.

If toileting worries are part of it, plan more fluids earlier in the day and keep the route to the bathroom clear.

Next visit, check: are drinks visible, reachable, and something they actually like? 💧

Care work is built on practical moments. Helping someone start the day well, keeping routines steady, and noticing the small changes that matter.

If you are considering a role as a Care Professional, this is what the work often looks like: calm support, clear communication, and respect for the person’s choices. No two visits are the same, but the purpose is consistent: helping someone live well at home, with dignity and reassurance.

You do not have to wait for a “last straw”.

Myth: Home care only starts after a fall, illness, or hospital stay.
Fact: Many families put support in place earlier, to keep life steady and reduce pressure.

Early help might look like companionship, meal support, light home tasks, or a check-in visit. It can also give you, as an adult child, clearer visibility of how things are day to day.

If you have a “something’s changed” feeling, start with one conversation and one small step.

✨ Celebrating Our Incredible Care Professionals ✨

We recently came together to celebrate some truly outstanding members of our team at our Care Professional Awards — and what a wonderful celebration it was.

🌟 Helen – Lifetime of Care Award
Helen is celebrating an incredible 10 years with us, and we couldn’t be prouder. Starting her journey new to care, she has grown into an exceptional and dedicated professional who builds truly special relationships with her clients. Her compassion, commitment and kindness shine through in everything she does.
Helen, thank you for the heart you bring to your role every single day — this recognition is so well deserved. 💙

🌟 Joyce Bristow
Joyce truly is worth her weight in gold. She goes above and beyond in everything she does, always putting others first and making a real difference. Her warmth, humour and positivity brighten the days of both clients and colleagues alike. From ensuring no one misses out on a special occasion to noticing the little things that matter most, Joyce embodies what caring is all about. We are so lucky to have you.

🌟 Sarah Farmer – Companionship Champion
Sarah has a special gift for making those around her feel comfortable, supported and valued. Whether it’s creating personalised flash cards to help a client maintain independence, or offering continued comfort to a family during an emotional time, Sarah’s empathy and dedication truly set her apart. We are so proud to have her as part of our team.

To all our Care Professionals — thank you for the difference you make every single day. 💜

🌸 A Beautiful Thank You🌸

Yesterday we had the most heartwarming surprise in the office.

One of our wonderful Care Professionals, Muna, came in with flowers for Fiona from our Scheduling team to say thank you for always going above and beyond in the support she gives to the team.

It’s moments like this that remind us what Home Instead is all about – appreciation, teamwork and truly caring for one another. 💜

Fiona works tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly for our Care Professionals and clients, and it meant so much to see that recognised today.

Thank you, Muna, for your kindness – and thank you, Fiona, for everything you do. 🌷✨

A little fresh air can help the day feel more manageable, but it works best when the plan is calm and realistic. This guide is designed for adult children who want to support a parent to get out without it becoming a “big event”.

Keep it short, choose the easiest option, and make space for breaks. Even a brief walk, a garden visit, or a quiet coffee can support routine and confidence over time.

Save this for your next visit, and share it with siblings if you plan together.

Mobility is personal. So is confidence. ♿️

International Wheelchair Day is a reminder that accessibility supports everyday freedom and choice.

If your parent uses a wheelchair, small practical details can help outings feel more manageable: checking step-free routes, allowing extra time, and choosing places with accessible toilets and seating.

It can also help to ask what feels hardest right now. Sometimes it is doorways and kerbs. Sometimes it is confidence after a change in health. Either way, a calm plan and the right support can help them stay connected to the things they enjoy.

Today, ask: “What would make getting out easier?”

If you’re worried about slips, stairs, or getting up from a chair, start with what you’ve noticed, not what you fear.

You could say:
“I’ve noticed moving around feels more tiring lately. Would you be open to looking at a few small changes to make things easier and safer?”

Then take one gentle step together, like adding a brighter hallway light, removing a loose rug, or booking a mobility review. Keeping it practical helps your parent feel listened to and in control.

If siblings are involved, a bit of clarity now can save a lot of hurt later.

Start with a calm chat about what needs doing and what each of you can realistically manage. Agree one shared place for updates (a notes app or group chat) and one regular check-in time, so no one’s carrying it all alone.

If someone can’t do hands-on support, they can still help with calls, shopping orders, or appointment admin.

Save this and set a 15-minute sibling call.

A small gesture for a wonderful community group

After spending such a lovely morning at the Chorlton Good Neighbours coffee morning last week, we were sorry to hear their microwave had broken.

We’re delighted that their new microwave has now been delivered 😊

Community groups like this provide such an important space for friendship, conversation, and connection — and we’re always happy to support where we can.

Thank you again for such a warm welcome

Our story

Home Instead South Manchester aims to give the kind of care we would want for our only family members. We opened our office in April 2015 in Chorlton with the objective of providing high quality care at home for elderly people who want to remain happy and independent in their own homes. We believe that good care can’t be rushed and so our minimum visit time is one hour. Our CAREGivers are kind and friendly people who want to make a difference in their clients’ lives and who visit the same clients so they can build real relationships.

We want to make a difference in our community too, so we run a free singing group on a Tuesday afternoon at Parkfield Court where all are welcome, and we distribute a free “ What’s On Where” guide of 100 things to do in our local community.
