NHS bowel cancer screening kits are offered to everyone aged between 50 and 74.

They can help find cancer early, before you even have any symptoms. And the earlier cancer is found, the easier it can be to treat.

When your kit arrives, put it by the loo. Don’t put it off.

Let someone else know they should send their kit back – especially as April is Bowel Cancer Awareness month.

Get to know the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer:

Blood in your poo, or bleeding from your bottom
- A change in your bowel habits such as looser poo, needing to poo more often, pain or feeling like you’ve not properly emptied your bowels.
- Persistent pain, or a lump in your tummy
- Bloating when you eat
- Loss of appetite
- Losing weight without trying

If you’ve had any of these symptoms for three weeks or more, or you’re just worried, talk to your GP.

They have these conversations every day, so there’s no need to feel embarrassed when talking about your bowels.

There can be many common reasons for these symptoms, and most people will not have cancer. But finding it early makes it much more treatable.

Know your units, know your limits.

There isn’t a completely safe amount of alcohol you can drink, but you are at lower risk of harm if you drink 14 units or less a week.

Small changes – like alternating with water or choosing smaller measures – can also make difference.
