Did you know that in the UK, children aged 6 months to 5 years are recommended to have daily supplements containing vitamins A, C and D?

For children who eat a wide variety of foods, they can help top up nutritional intake. But they can be particularly helpful for picky eaters, where diet variety is often more limited and certain nutrients may be harder to get consistently from food alone.

If you have a picky eater at home, small steps like this can make a meaningful difference while you work on expanding their diet.

Many parents I speak to feel like they're constantly second-guessing their child's eating.

Is this normal?

Should they be eating more variety?

Why will they eat something one day but refuse it the next?

Sometimes what parents need most is clear, calm guidance to help them understand what's actually going on.

I'm always grateful when families share feedback like this.

Supporting parents to feel more confident around their child's feeding is such an important part of my work.

Change begins when mealtimes are calm

If you stop bribing and coercing your child to eat - do you think they would lose weight or miss out (more) on key nutrients?

If the answer is no - that's your permission to stop forcing and go easy on yourself.

Start with calm ♥️

These are subtle signs I know parents are off to a good start with their picky eating journey.

These can be he hardest parts to crack. But with a little help, change is possible.

I like that anti-spill cups really help with mess.

Children should still be given opportunities to drink from an open free flow cup as often as is practicable within family and school life.

I do have a cohort of neuro-divergent children who will not drink anything unless it's from a specific cup, in which case I never argue with that. Optimising hydration always comes first before we start faffing with types of cups!

I also have a cohort of children who struggle with open free flow cups - and I work hard on helping them with their skills.

Feeding struggles are common - but they’re not always something to “wait and see.”

If your baby is gagging excessively, refusing textures or taking forever to eat, early support can make a huge difference. Feeding skills develop fast in the first year, and the earlier we intervene, the easier progress usually is.

I’m a specialist paediatric feeding therapist and I offer a Weaning SOS call for parents who want quick, practical advice without committing to a full assessment.
