πŸ’¬ β€œMy child has loose stools, vomiting and a fever… should I worry?”
This is such a common and stressful situation. When your child is unwell like this, it can feel overwhelming.

πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Based on NICE CKS guidance and NHS advice, the most common cause of loose stools with vomiting and fever in children is viral gastroenteritis. It is unpleasant, but in most cases it settles on its own within a few days.

🧠 The biggest risk is not the infection itself, but dehydration.

✨ Usually reassuring signs (NICE CKS): β€’ Your child is alert between episodes
β€’ Taking small sips of fluid
β€’ Passing urine
β€’ Tears when crying
β€’ Fever responding to paracetamol or ibuprofen

πŸ’§ Offer small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution. Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding. Don’t worry too much about food in the first 24 hours β€” fluids matter most.

🚩 Seek urgent medical advice if (NICE CKS red flags):
β€’ Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes, fewer wet nappies)
β€’ Very drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
β€’ Persistent severe abdominal pain
β€’ Green (bile-stained) or bloody vomit
β€’ Blood in stools
β€’ A non-blanching rash
β€’ Fever lasting more than 5 days
β€’ Your child is under 3 months with a temperature β‰₯38Β°C
β€’ You feel something isn’t right

🀍 According to NICE, parental concern is important. You know your child’s normal.
Most cases improve within 3–7 days.
Hydration, monitoring, and reassurance
are key.

You're not overreacting by asking.
And it’s always okay to seek help if you’re unsure.

Save this for later πŸ’™

Teething can feel endless β€” but there are simple, safe ways to help πŸ¦·πŸ’›
What actually works:
β€’ Cooling (not freezing) – chilled teethers or a cool damp cloth soothe inflamed gums. Avoid freezer-hard rings that can damage tissue.
β€’ Gentle gum massage – a clean finger with light pressure can reduce discomfort.
β€’ Silicone textures – firm, one-piece teethers are safer than liquid-filled ones.
β€’ Extra comfort – cuddles and distraction genuinely help regulate pain responses.
β€’ Protect the skin – drool can cause rashes, so keep the chin dry and use barrier cream if needed.
Avoid numbing gels containing benzocaine and skip teething necklaces due to choking risk. If pain is significant, speak to your clinician about appropriate dosing of paracetamol or ibuprofen (age-appropriate).
Thank you 🀍

πŸ“š Best toddler books I recommend as a doctor
Reading daily supports language development, attention, emotional regulation, and bonding. These are favourites I often suggest in clinic β€” split into UK and USA based classics.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ UK-Based Favourites

πŸ“– The Gruffalo – Julia Donaldson
Repetition and rhyme build vocabulary and memory. Predictable structure helps toddlers join in and strengthens speech patterns.

πŸ“– Dear Zoo – Rod Campbell
Interactive lift-the-flap design supports fine motor skills and anticipation. Great for early descriptive language.

πŸ“– Each Peach Pear Plum – Janet & Allan Ahlberg
Encourages attention and early comprehension. Helps toddlers recognise characters and follow simple narrative links.

πŸ“– We’re Going on a Bear Hunt – Michael Rosen
Movement, rhythm, and repetition support auditory memory and expressive language.

πŸ“– Guess How Much I Love You – Sam McBratney
Supports emotional bonding and language around feelings and affection.

LπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ USA-Based Favourites

πŸ“– Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? – Bill Martin Jr & Eric Carle
Excellent for repetition and early vocabulary building. Supports sequencing and confidence in speech.

πŸ“– Goodnight Moon – Margaret Wise Brown
Calming rhythm supports bedtime routine and emotional regulation.

πŸ“– The Very Hungry Caterpillar – Eric Carle
Teaches sequencing, counting, and days of the week in a visually engaging way.

πŸ“– Chicka Chicka Boom Boom – Bill Martin Jr & John Archambault
Fun rhythm that introduces letter recognition and phonological awareness.

πŸ“– Where the Wild Things Are – Maurice Sendak
Supports emotional understanding and imaginative development. πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Why this matters medically:
Early reading is linked to stronger language skills by age 3, which predicts later academic confidence. It also strengthens parent-child attachment and attention span.

You don’t need long sessions.
Five minutes a day is powerful.

πŸ’¬ β€œWhen should I start weaning… and how do I even begin?”
If you’re feeling unsure, that’s completely normal. Starting solids can feel like a big step.
πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Most children are ready to begin weaning at around 6 months. It’s less about age alone and more about developmental signs.
🧠 Look for: β€’ Sitting with support
β€’ Good head and neck control
β€’ Bringing food or toys to their mouth
β€’ Loss of the tongue-thrust reflex (not automatically pushing food out)
Before this stage, milk alone is enough.
✨ How to start: β€’ Begin with small amounts once a day
β€’ Offer soft, simple foods
β€’ Try vegetables, fruits, and iron-rich foods
β€’ Let your child explore textures
β€’ Increase gradually based on interest
πŸ₯„ Iron is particularly important at this stage, so include foods like lentils, beans, eggs, or well-cooked meat.
🀍 It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to look like social media. Weaning is about learning, not how much they eat at first.
Mess is normal. Gagging can be normal. Progress is gradual.
You’re not late.
You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re supporting a new skill.

Helping your little one learn to go to bed calmly starts before bedtime πŸ’€πŸ’›

Here’s what actually works:
β€’ Consistent timing – aim for the same bedtime each night to support their body clock.
β€’ Wind-down routine (20–30 mins) – bath, pyjamas, book, cuddle. Keep it predictable and calm.
β€’ Dim the lights – melatonin rises in low light. Avoid screens 1 hour before bed.
β€’ Put down drowsy but awake – helps them link the cot with falling asleep.
β€’ Comfort, not overstimulation – calm voice, minimal interaction if they wake.
β€’ Safe sleep basics – firm flat mattress, clear cot, on their back, room 16–20Β°C.
Sleep is a skill. Consistency builds confidence πŸ’›
