π¬ βMy child has loose stools, vomiting and a feverβ¦ should I worry?β
This is such a common and stressful situation. When your child is unwell like this, it can feel overwhelming.
π¨ββοΈ Based on NICE CKS guidance and NHS advice, the most common cause of loose stools with vomiting and fever in children is viral gastroenteritis. It is unpleasant, but in most cases it settles on its own within a few days.
π§ The biggest risk is not the infection itself, but dehydration.
β¨ Usually reassuring signs (NICE CKS): β’ Your child is alert between episodes
β’ Taking small sips of fluid
β’ Passing urine
β’ Tears when crying
β’ Fever responding to paracetamol or ibuprofen
π§ Offer small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution. Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding. Donβt worry too much about food in the first 24 hours β fluids matter most.
π© Seek urgent medical advice if (NICE CKS red flags):
β’ Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes, fewer wet nappies)
β’ Very drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
β’ Persistent severe abdominal pain
β’ Green (bile-stained) or bloody vomit
β’ Blood in stools
β’ A non-blanching rash
β’ Fever lasting more than 5 days
β’ Your child is under 3 months with a temperature β₯38Β°C
β’ You feel something isnβt right
π€ According to NICE, parental concern is important. You know your childβs normal.
Most cases improve within 3β7 days.
Hydration, monitoring, and reassurance
are key.
You're not overreacting by asking.
And itβs always okay to seek help if youβre unsure.
Save this for later π
