Last night, Dr Daniel Weisberg, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Director of CAYP Psychology, spoke on ITV News about supporting young children through grief and loss.

Dr Weisberg highlighted that support for young children looks very different to support for adults. For a 4- or 5-year-old, “sitting down and talking therapy isn’t going to work” instead, children need safe spaces in their own language, through play and creativity.

He stated that play can be a very powerful tool: drawings, role play, and even toy figures can reveal anxieties and questions children cannot yet put into words. As Dr Weisberg explained, “It’s an art, not necessarily a science, but it starts to open up the doors to a world that we can’t access through talking as we work with adults.”

He also stressed the importance of an open and loving environment, where children know they will not be criticised or judged for expressing their feelings. Creating these “safety nets” early, even in the context of a parent’s terminal illness, allows children to process things in their own way and at their own pace.

Therapeutic storytelling, using books, pictures or comics, can also help children understand illness, sadness, and grief in age-appropriate ways. “We’re talking about what illness looks like and what sadness means, and that it’s ok to feel like that, and that a hug is powerful,” Dr Weisberg explained.

We are proud that Dr Weisberg, on behalf of CAYP Psychology, was able to share these insights on such a sensitive and important topic. Thank you ITV News for reaching out to us.
