Some of my clients wonder why I ask questions about the health of their mouth and dental history in their intake form.

From a naturopathic and functional perspective, the mouth is a mirror of the whole body. The oral microbiome gives us important clues about what’s happening in the gut, the immune system and even the cardiovascular and hormonal systems.

An imbalance of bacteria or fungal overgrowth (like oral Candida) doesn’t just stay local, it can seed inflammation, disrupt digestion and affect nutrient absorption, liver function, and immune regulation. Chronic oral infections and bleeding gums can also increase the burden on the heart and pancreas, as research is now showing.

I often put clients on oral protocols to rebalance bacteria and clear Candida, because restoring oral ecology is a key step in restoring whole-body health.

Think of the mouth as the gateway to the gut. If things aren’t balanced there, it can affect everything downstream.

I wish you could smell my kitchen at the moment- I’ve sprinkled some pears with ginger powder and it is just lovely in here. 🥰 and these apples don’t look much, but they’ve had cinnamon on them and they are delicious. 😁
This thing is on constantly at the moment! What a harvest it’s been! Thank you to my wonderful clients who keep bringing me garden produce xx 🍎 🍐

Mark came home with some quince today. I’ve never had that before, so after a bit of research I chose to roast and caramelise them in the oven. Well… we have a phrase around these parts… they certainly make your tabs laugh! 😆

I’ve been so lucky to have been given so much lovely fruit from client’s gardens recently. On this wet and windy Friday night, I am enjoying dehydrating fruit and making sauces from these lovely pears and apples. 🍎 🍐

Awww, thrilled to receive these this morning from the loveliest lady, who at 71 was experiencing very painful knees. She’s had me in stitches this morning telling me about how she’s now playing dodgeball with her grandson!

We finally made it to Wonder of Wellness Dental and Wellbeing Centre in Huddersfield and it was so worth the 2-hour trip each way! 🦷💫

It’s a holistic dental practice, which means they look at your whole health, not just your teeth. Instead of focusing only on fillings and drilling, holistic dentistry considers how dental treatments, materials, and oral health impact your entire body, from hormones and immunity to energy and wellbeing.

The care was absolutely fantastic, and the environment felt more like a spa than a clinic. The waiting room reading material was so much more my style than the usual magazines…books on wellness, energy, healing, and nutrition everywhere you look.

Many dental practices still use approaches and materials that can be toxic to the body. Thus was cutting-edge, but with a holistic focus that feels in tune with mind, body, and spirit. Truly fascinating, and I’m so glad we went.

💚 Highly recommend if you’re looking for dental care that supports the whole of you, not just your smile!

Here are some simple ways to support prostate health:

🥦 Eat plenty of vegetables, especially cruciferous veg like broccoli, kale, and cauliflower.

🐟 Get your healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, and seeds. These help keep inflammation down.

🚶‍♂️ Move your body. Regular exercise supports circulation, hormones, and weight balance.

💧 Stay hydrated. Water helps flush the urinary tract and keeps everything working well.

🛌 Manage stress & sleep. High stress and poor sleep can upset hormone balance, which plays a role in prostate health.

🌿 Herbal support:

🌱Saw Palmetto. This is often used for enlarged prostate symptoms (frequent night trips, weak flow). Works by gently influencing hormones linked to prostate growth.

🌱Nettle root / nettle tea. This herb may help reduce inflammation and support urinary flow. Nettle leaf tea is also rich in minerals, making it a good daily tonic.

💊 Key nutrients:

Zinc . This is concentrated in the prostate and is vital for its health (pumpkin seeds, seafood, meat).

Vitamin D. Low levels are linked with poorer prostate outcomes.

Omega-3 fats. These are anti-inflammatory and are found in oily fish or supplements.

Lycopene. This is an antioxidant in cooked tomatoes, linked to lower prostate cancer risk.

Selenium & Vitamin E. These are helpful in small amounts from food (Brazil nuts, seeds, oils), but not in high-dose supplements.

❗️ Supplements and herbs can support the prostate, but they’re not a substitute for a balanced diet, lifestyle, and regular PSA checks.

PSA Myths Busted

There’s a lot of confusion about PSA testing. Here are 10 of the most common myths and the truths you need to know:

Myth 1: “A low PSA means I’m safe.”
👉 Not always true. Some men have prostate cancer even with a low PSA.

Myth 2: “A high PSA always means cancer.”
👉 No, PSA can rise because of an enlarged prostate, infection, or even after exercise, a recent high meat diet or ejaculation.

Myth 3: “I don’t need a test unless I have symptoms.”
👉 Prostate cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages.

Myth 4: “Only older men need to worry about PSA.”
👉 While prostate cancer is more common with age, it can affect men in their 40s and 50s too.

Myth 5: “If my PSA hasn’t changed, I don’t need regular checks.”
👉 Regular testing matters as trends over time are more important than one result.

Myth 6: “The PSA test is painful.”
👉 It’s just a simple blood test, nothing more.

Myth 7: “If I’m healthy and fit, I don’t need to worry about my prostate.”
👉 Lifestyle helps, but prostate cancer can affect any man.

Myth 8: “PSA tests always lead to unnecessary treatment.”
👉 Not true. PSA is a monitoring tool. A raised level usually leads to more checks, not immediate treatment.

Myth 9: “Once I’ve had a PSA test, I don’t need another one.”
👉 It’s about regular checks. Spotting changes over time is what matters.

Myth 10: “Talking about prostate health is embarrassing.”
👉 It shouldn’t be. Having the conversation could save your life.

A PSA test is a simple blood test that looks at your prostate health. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen. It’s a protein made by the prostate that shows up in your blood.

A high PSA can sometimes point to prostate cancer, but it can also rise for other reasons like an enlarged prostate or infection.

‼️A low PSA doesn’t always mean you’re safe either. Some men can still have prostate cancer even when PSA is low.

That’s why the key is regular checks. It’s not always about one result, it’s about spotting changes over time. If it is seen that your PSA is increasing, even if you are in the low range, this trend should be paid attention to.

A yearly check, or six-monthly if you prefer, can be a great step to monitoring your health.

You can get a PSA test done at your GP surgery, or I can arrange that for you. Either way, it’s a quick step that gives you peace of mind and keeps you in control of your health.

The prostate is small, but it can cause big problems if things aren’t right.

Common problems with the prostate include:

Enlarged prostate (BPH)
This is very common as men get older.

Prostatitis
This is when the prostate becomes inflamed, sometimes due to infection.

Prostate cancer
In the early stages, prostate cancer often causes no symptoms at all.

Some of the most common symptoms you might experience if your prostate isn’t quite right are below, BUT it’s also important to know that some men with prostate cancer can have no symptoms whatsoever.

🔵 Needing to wee more often, especially at night

🔵 Difficulty starting or stopping the flow

🔵 A weak stream of urine

🔵 Feeling like the bladder hasn’t emptied fully

🔵 Sudden or urgent need to pass urine

🔵 Pain or burning when urinating

🔵 Pain in the lower back, groin, or pelvic area (more common in Prostatitis)

🔵 Painful ejaculation (more common in Prostatitis)

🔵 Sometimes fever, aches, or general flu-like feelings (more common in Prostatitis)

🔵 Blood in urine or semen

🔵 Pain in the hips, back, or pelvis that doesn’t go away

Most prostate problems are not cancer, but the symptoms can overlap. That’s why it’s so important to get checked if anything changes.

Do you know what your prostate is ? The prostate is a small gland, about the size of a walnut, and only men have one. It sits just below the bladder and its main job is to produce some of the fluid that makes up semen, helping sperm stay healthy and mobile.

Here’s something clever about how it works:
🌱 Urine and sperm both travel out of the body through the same tube called the urethra.
🌱 Urine is acidic, which could damage sperm.
🌱 The prostate protects sperm by releasing fluid that lowers the acidity and creates a safe passage, giving sperm the best chance to survive.
🌱The word “prostate” comes from a Greek term meaning “one who stands before” because it sits in front of the bladder.
🌱The prostate grows twice in a man’s life: once during puberty, and again after the age of 40.

Mother Nature really is clever, it’s such a tiny gland with such an important role.

Common problems with the prostate include enlargement, inflammation, and cancer.

We’ll be looking at these in more detail over the next few days.
