Virtual group education 💻 in Type 2 Diabetes

Earlier in the week we discussed the benefits of virtual patient groups.
This morning, a group of 8 participants have just completed part 2 of the DESMOND course, for people with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, via MS Teams.

Some members of the group were newly diagnosed and others had been diagnosed for a number of years, but shared great ideas and learned a lot from eachother about managing diabetes.

Hi I'm Cindy one of the Community Dietitians in the team. On 4 days a week I work for the NHS and 1 day a week I work as a Freelance Dietitian. I've been doing this for around 5 years now and allows me to gain even more knowledge within dietetics.

It's great that I can share knowledge between both roles, which is the beauty of the profession. There is also a freelance dietitian platform, where dietitians can openly ask & share information so you never feel alone.

The pioneers of dietetics
You may remember from last year we heard from Claire Flint, assistant dietetic practitioner about her journey on to the apprenticeship course, during which she won the Trust’s AHP appreciation award for Student, Apprentice or Preceptee of the Year.

We are ecstatic to report that she completed her course earlier this year and is now a registered Dietitian working within the community team!!!! This was pioneering in the true sense of the word; she was the first intake on this course, and she was one of the first AHPs to complete an apprenticeship within our Trust. Well done Claire!

Day 4️⃣: Dietitians week!

Today we are spending time thinking about Pioneers of Dietetics, but first we thought we would recap on what is a dietitian ♥️ and how do we help people:

Dietitians are essential healthcare professionals who help people make informed choices about their eating behaviours and how this impacts their health.🥗🍽️🥣

Our expertise contributes to disease prevention, recovery from illness, improved quality of life, and overall well-being at all points through a person’s life. 💪

Oh and we also love food 😊 😋

Dietitian's week - celebrating progress! 🎉

⭐️ As a team we are always striving to make positive changes to improve the service, including in DESMOND Type 2 Diabetes groups. This includes improving how DESMOND sessions are delivered to or accessed by participants, but also methods of improving educator knowledge, helping us to provide the highest standard of care.

🏆 We were honoured to have this work recognised in November when we won the National DESMOND Innovation award!

We are currently working on a project with patients and GP surgery staff to find out what barriers people face in attending DESMOND & how to overcome them, and hope this will help improve uptake & accessibility to DESMOND in the future.

💻 DESMOND can be accessed as a face to face group, virtual group or via e learning (myDESMOND).
