When booking Lymphatic Drainage you should remember…
Lymphatic drainage is not your typical massage. It uses very light, gentle pressure rather than deep or firm techniques.
The therapist stimulates lymph nodes using gentle pumping and circular movements. After this, the lymphatic vessels are encouraged to move fluid using light rhythmic strokes that stretch the skin.
These movements help guide lymph through the vessels towards the next lymph node.
If deep or firm pressure is used, the therapist may compress the tiny lymphatic vessels, which can reduce lymph flow.
You can imagine lymphatic vessels like soft tubes just beneath the skin — too much pressure can flatten them.
Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have a central pump like the heart. Instead, lymph moves through small contractions in the vessel walls and is helped along by muscle movement and breathing.
This is why if you are sedentary for long periods your lymphatic system may become sluggish.
You can support your lymphatic system by moving regularly and practicing diaphragmatic breathing.
