🔍 Understanding the Difference Between a Hazard and a Risk – Simplified

At Central Health & Safety Solutions (CHSS), we believe that awareness is the first step to prevention.

Hazard = A potential source of harm (e.g. a wet floor).
Risk = The chance that the hazard will actually cause harm (e.g. slipping and injuring yourself).

💡 Hazards are everywhere – but knowing how likely they are to hurt you, and how serious the consequences might be, is key to staying safe.

Whether you’re on a construction site, in a warehouse, or at an event — knowing the difference could prevent injury.

🚨 If You Suspect a Carbon Monoxide Leak 🚨
Or if your carbon monoxide detector activates

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas — making it invisible and deadly without a working detector.

❗️Signs & Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Exposure:
Headache

Dizziness or confusion

Nausea or vomiting

Tiredness or drowsiness

Shortness of breath

Chest pain (in severe cases)

✅ What to Do Immediately:
Do not ignore the alarm – treat it seriously.

Open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.

Turn off all fuel-burning appliances, if safe to do so.

Evacuate the property immediately.

Call 999 (or 112) from a safe location.

Do not re-enter the building until told it is safe.

💡 Prevention Tip:
Test your CO alarms monthly and service fuel-burning appliances annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

🚗 DID YOU KNOW? – Airbag Safety Warning 🚨

Airbags deploy between 100 and 220 MPH.
If you’re riding with your feet on the dashboard and that airbag deploys—even in a minor crash—it could send your knees straight through your eye sockets.

This isn’t just theory. Emergency services and police are sharing real images like this to raise awareness. One moment of comfort can turn into a lifetime of injury or worse.

⚠️ Stay safe:
✔️ Always sit upright with your seatbelt properly fastened
✔️ Keep your feet on the floor, never on the dash
✔️ Be alert—passenger safety matters just as much as the driver’s

Protect yourself. Respect the risk.

📣 Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Setup – Home & Office Workstation Assessments

Whether you’re working from home or in the office, a poor workstation setup can lead to long-term health issues such as back pain, eye strain, and repetitive strain injuries.

✅ Employers have a legal duty under the UK Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 to assess and reduce the risks of DSE use for employees.

Key DSE Setup Tips:
🪑 Use an adjustable chair with lumbar support
🖥️ Keep the top of your screen at eye level
💡 Ensure good lighting with no screen glare
⌨️ Keep keyboard and mouse close to avoid overreaching
⏱️ Take regular breaks – at least 5 minutes every hour

🔍 Need help assessing your team’s workstations?
We offer professional DSE assessments for both office and home-based staff.

📣 Mental Health in the Workplace – Let’s Talk

Mental health is just as important as physical safety.

In the UK, 1 in 4 people experience a mental health issue every year. Yet, stigma and silence still prevent many from getting the help they need.

It’s time to change that. Let’s build a workplace culture where everyone feels safe, supported, and heard.

✅ Encourage open conversations
🗨️ Check in with your colleagues regularly
📚 Provide access to mental health awareness and first aid training
📞 Signpost to professional support services like Mind, Samaritans, or your company’s EAP

Support starts with a simple “Are you okay?”

Together, we can create a safer, more compassionate workplace — one conversation at a time.
