KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON!!

Created before the war by the British Ministry of Information in 1938/39, it was the third poster designed to keep up spirits in the darker days. Though no names are attributed to the design it is believed Ernest Wallcousins coined the phrase, as he was always saying it around the ministry.

It was heralded as typifying the British 'stiff upper lip' and great resolve.

However it was NEVER actually used as the government described it as 'patronising' and it's said Chamberlain remarked "it will upset the German Chancellor even more"!!

In 2000 a book keeper discovered an old box of books, in between a couple of books was an original poster folded into four...........Stuart and Mary Manly are now very rich and the rest as they say is history!!

I'd like to think what makes England such a great place is kindness, caring, diversity and courage. We live in a troubled world, why make it harder by being dismissive, devious, divisive, or cruel.

We are all allowed to breathe the same air whatever, whoever or however we are.

Happy St George day ❤️

We had a family history day out on Wednesday. We went to Southwell workhouse museum near Nottingham. Looks beautiful doesn't it!!

It was the very first workhouse for the poor and destitute in the uk, built in 1824 and was built to resemble a prison. It changed the way we looked after the poor....... Or did it. Well worth a visit, I think it will make you a kinder, more giving person.

Over the weekend, we'll explode some workhouse myths and ask if anything has changed!!

Cheery soul aren't I!! 🫣
