At a conference today I learned about the fabulous work this charity is doing to support serving and veteran police officers and staff, volunteers, and their families who have suffered any physical or psychological harm as a result of policing.

Among other interventions they offer evidence based psychological therapies and have demonstrated some impressive results with their intensive EMDR programme.

Please share far and wide

I love this graphic by about the things you should can (and should) say to your therapist.

“This was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend who was having issues with her therapist, but didn’t know if she could, or should, bring it up. PLEASE. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY. BRING. IT. UP (if it feels safe, obv).”

A nice article detailing some of the benefits the author gained from therapy.

"Therapy is a powerful means to an end, and it has armed me with the skills, in effect, to be my own therapist"

Therapy was like finding a key for a door that had been locked my whole life. Here are the nine things it’s taught me

Trauma sensitive mindfulness

“When we ask folks with a trauma history to be still, close their eyes, and pay close and continuous attention to an internal landscape that’s painful and overwhelming without adequate support, it’s possible they’ll feel an increase in emotional arousal and symptoms of traumatic stress including flashbacks and intrusive thoughts”

“This is why it’s key to find a therapist or guide who’s informed on trauma, and your type of trauma in particular, so you can approach mindfulness from a place of comfort and security."

Some moments seem to live in our bodies forever. They don't have to.

“Part of being a social species, it turns out, is that we regulate one another’s body budgets — the ways in which our brains manage the bodily resources we use every day.”

It’s ironic but true: The best thing for your nervous system is another human and the worst thing for your nervous system is another human. Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett tells us why.

If you’ve met with me for therapy, you will know I am a huge advocate of the use of the breath to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This article discusses a recent study which explored the physiological impact of nasal breathing specifically.

“During nasal inhalation, the fast electrical rhythms in the amygdala and hippocampus became stronger. One way to understand this is to think of the system as an orchestra: our nasal breathing is the grand conductor, setting the tempo for the slow playing of the smell regions of the brain while weaving in the faster rhythms of the emotion and memory regions”.

Our in-breath is like a remote control for our brains, directly affecting electrical signals that communicate with memory and emotional processing centers.
