“Are you even listening to what I’m saying?” 🤦🏼‍♀️ Something we’ve all said or thought at some point when speaking to children. We look at their body language and their facial expressions and possibly their lack of response and assume that they’re definitely not listening! I experienced this recently with a teen client, it felt like their lack of engagement, the endless “I don’t knows” 🤷🏼‍♀️ and their demeanour pointed to them not being interested in the work we were doing. I could not have been more wrong! 🙈 A week later I hear from their parent who tells me their child thoroughly enjoyed the session and they’d had a great week at school as a result 🥳 So the lesson here is 🤓: keep on providing your child and teen with those positive words of encouragement, keep telling them that you are proud and they are loved 🥰 Remind them that they can always talk to you 💬 Your words are not a waste, you’re not wasting your breath, your child is just processing and is not always going to gush with gratitude and thank you for your inspirational words, however, they may well do in years to come 🎉 You are being listened to - keep doing what you’re doing, it’ll be worth it💙😊

Knowing a parent is beginning to see their child happy and confident once more is beautiful 🥰 I’m so honoured to be able to support them on that journey. When they feel compelled to write a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Google review to tell the 🌍 about it, we’ll that’s the icing on the cake 🧁🥰

Sometimes when worrying about your child, it can help to look in the mirror and look at your own actions and behaviours to see if there are any similarities with how you see your child coping.❗️Worried about how they are handling conflict? ➡️Ask yourself “how do I handle conflict?” ❗️Worried about how they manage their anger? ➡️Ask yourself “how do I manage MY anger?” ❗️Worried about how they manage their anxiety? Ask yourself “how do I manage MY anxiety?” This isn’t about blame, it’s about recognising areas where you can model better actions and behaviours, because whether we like it or not, children model the behaviour and actions of the people around them.
And sometimes, we can be modelling the best behaviours in the world but our child can still find these things a struggle so if you’d like to chat about how you can help your child, improve their emotional well-being, send me a DM or get in touch via the contact details in my bio 💛

Do you know a child or teen struggling with their self-esteem? Is it stopping them from getting involved in activities or enjoying their life?

Are they:
👉🏻 Self-critical and hard on themselves
👉🏻 Lacking in confidence?
👉🏻 Believe that the other kids are better than they are?
👉🏻 Doubt their abilities no matter what it is that they are doing?
👉🏻 Letting others treat them poorly?

Would you like them to feel more relaxed, calm and confident about themselves instead?

I'm a therapist offering children and young people the opportunity to join me in a series of four online 1-2-1 sessions where they'll learn how to:
⭐️ Change their negative internal chat
⭐️ Increase their resilience to new situations e.g starting a new school/college
⭐️ Increase their confidence and self belief in their own abilities
⭐️ Be proud of who they are!

Sessions are available on a first come first served basis.

If you'd like to know more, DM me or use contact details in bio.

Change is never easy but it will be worth it in the end, just hang in there🙂🫶🥳

Sometimes it’s worth checking in with ourselves to ensure that what we’re offering, to anyone having a tough time, is in fact empathy and NOT sympathy! Empathy let’s the person know you really hear them and want to support them ❤️Sympathy tells a person, you have my attention for a few minutes but then I’ll be on to the next thing 🤦🏼‍♀️ If anything it can leave the person feeling worse, because they may feel rejected, worthless, stupid for sharing etc. So if you know someone is having a tough time and isn’t sharing much, check in with yourself and see if what you’ve been offering them previously has been sympathy or empathy?!

I’m sure many parents and care givers are familiar with asking the question “how was school today?” and getting a response that is loaded with lots of negatives of how their day was the worst day ever! 🤦🏼‍♀️

💡Instead of asking “how was your day?” change the question to “tell me 3 good things about your day” If they tell you they really want to tell you about the drama that happened, let them know you will listen to them, AFTER they have focused on some good stuff that happened that day too! 🌈

Practicing this daily will break their habit of always focusing on the negatives and help them to realise that there is actually positives to their day too!! 🧠

The positives don’t need to be massive, they can be as simple as “I had a laugh with my mates at break time” or “lunch was nice” - it’s just about retraining their brain to look for the positives instead of focusing on the negative continually😊
