Hoorah, we have another meet the team.
Here we go:

Title / AKA - Gilly

How long have you been working within the medical industry? 3 years

Do you have a favourite thing about being a physio?
I really enjoy building a strong rapport with my patients and helping them make positive changes in their lives in any way I can

To date, what is your greatest sporting memory? Representing GB universities at the European Universities Sports Association rowing regatta in Turkey alongside some of my best mates

Greatest career highlight so far? Having the opportunity to work as the team physiotherapist on a tour to Japan was definitely a standout

Plans professionally speaking - I'm always looking for opportunities to grow and develop - continuous improvement is a key focus for me, as I strive to provide the highest quality care for my patients

Best advice you ever received - 'communication is key' - simple, but it's made a huge difference in both my professional and personal life

Random fact : I can do the worm (don't ask... actually do - I'll probably end up doing it)!

Exercise of the month: (slightly scary sounding) Skull crushers!!!

Who doesn't love good triceps?!

Triceps brachii is the large muscle located on the back of the upper arm.
Action: extending the elbow and straightening the arm.
It has 3 heads - a long, lateral, and medial—that originate from different points on the shoulder blade and upper arm bone but converge to form a single tendon that attaches to the elbow. When you push or straighten your arm, the triceps contract, and they are crucial for activities like push-ups, opening doors, and other movements involving elbow extension.

This exercise is great and can be adjusted to suit needs, for instance it can be done on the floor at home, with one weight or 2, or done with one arm at a time and supporting the working arm.

The name skull crusher, well you can kind of see why it's called that, especially if you get it wrong. 😉

Sophie, one of our fab physiotherapists, has had her total hip replacement surgery and is home starting her journey of rest, recovery, and rebuilding 🥳💪
Don't worry, her very good boy Roscoe will be over seeing her recovery. As you can see he is already assisting her in her exercises.

This is amazing! Does anyone even move like this anymore (except dancers, of course).

Exercise of the month, with a summer holiday twist: Star-jumps, aka jumping jacks!

As we are in the midst of the summer holidays it seemed more appropriate to get this out earlier this month but also to look at something that's really great for kids to do!

Introducing the Star-jump or the Jumping Jack!
Originally called a jumping jack as the move mimics the action of the toy of the same name. The star jump is more associated with the hardest version of this exercise.

We love it because it is a great warm up and gets the blood pumping, it is a versatile exercise that can be regressed and progressed as appropriate, perfect for testing global co-ordination, excellent for bone loading due its progressions, and its just an all-round fun exercise to perform. You can't do it and not smile! 😁

How many can you do?

We've not done a meet the team for a while (disguising an omission in that cheery intro line 🤭), so without further ado, here is Delphine!

Title: Delphine.

How long have you been an Osteopath?

I have been practising since 2008.

Do you have a favourite thing about being an Osteopath?

I enjoy the hands on approach osteopathy treatment provides. I like to take the time to find the root cause of injury for my patients. It's a collaboration between the patients and the practitioner. Patients open up to me about their general health, lifestyle, stress levels and any other factors that may affect their health. It is a very holistic approach to healthcare.

How would you describe yourself as an Osteopath?

A good listener, caring.

What is your greatest career highlight?

Learning more skills. Becoming more experienced in women's health and being able to help women more during their journeys through fertility, pregnancy, and post partum.

Any plans for the future? Professionally speaking:

Just simply getting better at what I do...

Best advice you ever received?

Keep digging! Keep looking for the root cause, the primary cause of lesion, of any injury, that is what makes us osteopaths!

Exercise of the month: Bird-Dog!

This is a great 'core' exercise.

When we say 'core' exercise this is referring to this moves connection with functional patterns, the area with which it trains, and the fact that, in our S&C coaches opinion, it should be part of a core group of exercises performed by most human beings.

Functional pattern? Most humans locomote from early childhood to old age using a cross sling pattern, i.e. an opposite arm to opposite leg movement. The bird-dog helps train some stability with in this pattern.

Starting the move in 4 point-kneeling is already an 'engaging' position, add the movement of one arm and one leg and the trunk is activated.
Add to this, the bird-dog can be progressed or regressed or adjusted based on the movement capability of the human in front of you, were it needed. For instance moving only one limb to reduce the working load, add weight or a resistance band to increase the load, or simply change the 'hold' time to increase time under tension.

Fun fact: Why is it called Bird-dog. Well (according to the briefest of searches) is in reference to the way hunting dogs, particularly pointers, position themselves when they've "found" their prey. 😄
