The Abbey Clinic is a well established multi-disciplinary practice based at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, Marlow Bucks. The clinic is available to anyone wishing to use our services. Our regular client base is drawn from the non-sporting general public, up to elite world-class athletes. The clinic is recognised by all Medical Insurance schemes

Our therapists strive to excel in all their treatments. We believe each patient requires an individually tailored programme of treatment which is focused to their own specific needs. We aim not to solely focus on relieving your pain, but also to establish the cause of the problem and prevent a reoccurrence, thus enabling you to return to your normal level of activity; whatever that might be!

Sophie, one of our fab physiotherapists, has had her total hip replacement surgery and is home starting her journey of rest, recovery, and rebuilding ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ’ช
Don't worry, her very good boy Roscoe will be over seeing her recovery. As you can see he is already assisting her in her exercises.

Exercise of the month, with a summer holiday twist: Star-jumps, aka jumping jacks!

As we are in the midst of the summer holidays it seemed more appropriate to get this out earlier this month but also to look at something that's really great for kids to do!

Introducing the Star-jump or the Jumping Jack!
Originally called a jumping jack as the move mimics the action of the toy of the same name. The star jump is more associated with the hardest version of this exercise.

We love it because it is a great warm up and gets the blood pumping, it is a versatile exercise that can be regressed and progressed as appropriate, perfect for testing global co-ordination, excellent for bone loading due its progressions, and its just an all-round fun exercise to perform. You can't do it and not smile! ๐Ÿ˜

How many can you do?

Title: Delphine.

How long have you been an Osteopath?

I have been practising since 2008.

Do you have a favourite thing about being an Osteopath?

I enjoy the hands on approach osteopathy treatment provides. I like to take the time to find the root cause of injury for my patients. It's a collaboration between the patients and the practitioner. Patients open up to me about their general health, lifestyle, stress levels and any other factors that may affect their health. It is a very holistic approach to healthcare.

How would you describe yourself as an Osteopath?

A good listener, caring.

What is your greatest career highlight?

Learning more skills. Becoming more experienced in women's health and being able to help women more during their journeys through fertility, pregnancy, and post partum.

Any plans for the future? Professionally speaking:

Just simply getting better at what I do...

Best advice you ever received?

Keep digging! Keep looking for the root cause, the primary cause of lesion, of any injury, that is what makes us osteopaths!

Exercise of the month: Bird-Dog!

This is a great 'core' exercise.

When we say 'core' exercise this is referring to this moves connection with functional patterns, the area with which it trains, and the fact that, in our S&C coaches opinion, it should be part of a core group of exercises performed by most human beings.

Functional pattern? Most humans locomote from early childhood to old age using a cross sling pattern, i.e. an opposite arm to opposite leg movement. The bird-dog helps train some stability with in this pattern.

Starting the move in 4 point-kneeling is already an 'engaging' position, add the movement of one arm and one leg and the trunk is activated.
Add to this, the bird-dog can be progressed or regressed or adjusted based on the movement capability of the human in front of you, were it needed. For instance moving only one limb to reduce the working load, add weight or a resistance band to increase the load, or simply change the 'hold' time to increase time under tension.

Fun fact: Why is it called Bird-dog. Well (according to the briefest of searches) is in reference to the way hunting dogs, particularly pointers, position themselves when they've "found" their prey. ๐Ÿ˜„

๐Ÿ“ž New Phone System at the Clinic ๐Ÿ“ž

Weโ€™ve recently upgraded our phone system to improve communication across the whole clinic. You may now see our reception team wearing headsets โ€” this allows us to offer better coverage and smoother coordination between admin and clinicians.

Rest assured, our team is still here to help you face to face at the desk, and weโ€™ll continue to assist with any questions or appointments just as before.

We appreciate your patience as we get used to the new system โ€” and please know weโ€™re still just as committed to supporting you with your injury needs in the same friendly, professional way we always have.

Thank you for your understanding ๐Ÿ’™

We have a new bench ๐Ÿฅฐ

Just over 6 months ago we lost a member of our clinic 'family'.
We felt the loss very deeply and still do some days.
As a team, we decided that a bench was the perfect way to remember them.

When needing a moment to pause and reflect, take a deep breath, or just enjoy our lunches, this will be our spot ๐Ÿ’–
