A Special Visit to Solihull Action through Advocacy

Last week we were honoured to welcome Paul Johnson, Alison McGrory and Clive Stone to our office, alongside members of the Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) team.

It was a fantastic opportunity to share the impactful work we do across the borough supporting people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs to have their voices heard, rights respected and choices valued.

During the visit our guests had the chance to speak with some of our advocacy partners, hearing firsthand how our person-centred approach is making a difference in their lives from building confidence to improving access to care, services and friendships.

We’re proud to be part of a community that values inclusion, empowerment and meaningful connection and grateful for the opportunity to showcase how SAtA is helping to build a stronger, more compassionate Solihull.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and took the time to learn more about our work and impact.

🌟What a Fantastic Day at the SHP Carers Trust Solihull Event! 🌟

We were thrilled to be part of the SHP Carers Event at Monkspath Surgery on Saturday 27th September a heartwarming and impactful gathering of carers, community members and local support services all under one roof.

It was an amazing opportunity to speak with over 80 carers and share the advocacy support we provide for individuals with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs across Solihull.

Huge thank you to the SHP Team for organising such a thoughtful and well-attended event, and for inviting us to be part of it.

These community events make a real difference connecting people to information, emotional support and the services that can help them feel heard and valued.

Let’s continue building a more supportive Solihull Togetherness NHS

On Friday, we had the pleasure of attending the Solihull Chamber of Commerce Awards, a wonderful evening recognising the brilliant work of Solihull’s charities, businesses and community champions.

This year, Solihull Action through Advocacy was proudly shortlisted for Non-Profit Champion 2025. While we didn’t take home the award, we were truly inspired by the energy in the room and the amazing organisations doing vital work across our borough.

We’re so proud to be part of such a vibrant and supportive business and community network.

A huge thank you to the Solihull Chambers of Commerce and Solihull College & University Centre for hosting a fantastic evening and to everyone who cheered us on.

Here’s to continuing our mission of amplifying voices and empowering people with learning disabilities and/or autism across Solihull.

Finding the Light Again: DP’s Journey Through the BYOC Project

At Solihull Action through Advocacy, our mission is simple: to ensure no one feels invisible, unheard, or alone.

That mission came to life in an extraordinary way through our Build Your Own Circle (BYOC) project, when we met DP a 66-year-old gentleman living alone with minimal support. What unfolded over the following months has been a powerful reminder of how personalised advocacy and social connection can change a life.

Meeting DP: “Everyone is having fun but I’m not.”

At our first meeting with DP he appeared anxious, withdrawn and unsure of himself. He told us that since lockdown, his world had shrunk. He had no family, very little confidence and didn’t feel like he belonged anywhere. He desperately wanted the things that many of us take for granted: to go out, meet people and just be part of something.

“Everyone is having fun but I’m not,” he said quietly.

Shortly after, a safeguarding concern arose and DP was formally referred to us through the BYOC project. That was the turning point.

Rebuilding Confidence Through Connection

Our approach with DP began with something simple, conversation. We took the time to build trust and understand what mattered to him.

Together, we planned a trip to the barbers and then a night out at a local disco for adults with learning disabilities. DP arrived dressed up and smiling. He loved his haircut, danced freely, sang loudly and had the time of his life.

A member of staff at the disco later emailed us to say how wonderful it was to see him so full of joy.

Health, Healing and Hope

When DP’s health began to interfere with his outings, we arranged support for him to see his GP. With treatment and encouragement, he bounced back and continued to explore the world again visiting shopping centres, going to the park, dropping in on new friends and even going to the pub for a chat.

He started to rediscover old passions, too.

DP is a talented artist. When we first met, he said he had lost his “spark.” Today, he paints portraits, landscapes and even decorated staff cars. With a grin, he tells us:

“It’s back!”

Friendship and the Power of Belonging

DP now regularly attends our BYOC group sessions, where he’s made friends and feels safe. He often says things like:

“I’m in the light, not the dark.”
“I feel all warm inside, not cold and yukky.”
“I feel like I did when my mum was here.”

These moments are powerful reminders of why our work matters.

We’re now supporting DP in gaining confidence to attend places independently, reconnect with his local community, and explore the idea of attending a local day service perhaps even going on a holiday.

Why BYOC Matters

The Build Your Own Circle project is designed to build lasting social networks, encourage self-advocacy, and empower people with learning disabilities and/or autism to live fuller, more connected lives.

DP’s journey shows us how life-changing this support can be.

“You’re on my side,” he said once. “People listen to you and you get things done for me.”

That’s what we’re here to do — to listen, to act and to make sure that no voice goes unheard.

Professional Praise for Advocacy in Action

At Solihull Action through Advocacy (SAtA), we’re proud of the difference our advocates make every day not just to individuals but to the whole professional team supporting them.

We’re honoured to share this powerful feedback from a Social Worker in Solihull's Adult Social Care team, about our advocate Natasha Sutton.

Natasha’s thoughtful, person-centred and professional approach embodies what independent advocacy is all about keeping the person at the centre of every discussion and supporting positive, rights-based outcomes.

Thank you to the Social Worker for the kind words and to Natasha for her outstanding work!

Did You Know?

If you have a learning disability or autism, you may have a legal right to an advocate.

Under laws like the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Mental Health Act 1983, local authorities must provide an independent advocate when:

- You have difficulty understanding or making decisions.
- Important changes are being made to your care or support.
- You don’t have someone appropriate to help you understand what's happening.

What an Advocate Does ?
• Helps you understand decisions
• Supports you in meetings
• Makes sure you're included and respected
• Helps you speak up or speaks up with you

At Solihull Action through Advocacy, we make sure that people with learning disabilities and autism in Solihull aren’t left out of important conversations especially when it comes to their health, social care and rights.

You’re not alone and you do have a voice.
Let us help you use it.

Do You Know Your Rights?

If you or someone you know is detained under the Mental Health Act, you have the legal right to support from an Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA).

But… Only 23% of people actually access this vital support.

At Solihull Action through Advocacy, our IMHA team ensures your voice is heard, your rights are respected and you're involved in decisions about your care and treatment.

"Unforgivable." That’s the word used to describe the preventable death of Myles Scriven, a young man with learning disabilities and autism as detailed in this heartbreaking ITV News report.

We’re deeply saddened but not surprised. Stories like this are why our work at Solihull Action through Advocacy matters more than ever.

Through our Capturing Change LeDeR Project, we support people with learning disabilities to:
• Share their experiences with health and social care.
• Tell their stories in their own words.
• Give honest feedback on how they were treated.
• Help the NHS make real, informed changes to the way care is delivered.

This project exists to prevent tragedies like Myles’ by making sure the voices of people with learning disabilities are heard, respected and used to shape safer services.

Advocacy means listening. Advocacy means change.
