🌍 World Health Day 2026 | 7 April

This year’s theme “Together for Health. Stand with Science” is a message we feel deeply at Solihull Action Through Advocacy (SATA).

Because the science is clear: people with learning disabilities, autism, dementia and mental health challenges continue to face real barriers when accessing healthcare. Too often, individuals are misunderstood in appointments, their needs are overlooked and their voices are not fully heard.

At SATA, we see this every day and we are here to change that.

We work alongside our advocacy partners to ensure they:
- Are heard and understood in healthcare settings.
- Understand their rights, choices and options.
- Are actively involved in decisions about their care.
- Feel confident accessing the services they are entitled to.

Our advocates stand beside individuals asking the right questions, speaking up when needed and ensuring people are treated with dignity, respect and equality.

Because health is not just about treatment it’s about being listened to, valued and included.

This World Health Day, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive healthcare system because health is a human right and every voice matters.

What an incredible day we shared at last week’s Learning Disability, Autism and Advocacy Conference.

One of the most powerful parts of the event was hearing directly from our advocacy partners, who bravely shared their real-life experiences. Their stories were honest, moving and deeply impactful. There is something truly powerful about hearing these voices first-hand, it reminds us why advocacy matters and why we must continue to listen, learn and act.

A key message our advocacy partners wanted to highlight is that they are human, just like everyone else. No matter their disability, their wants, needs and opinions are just as important and deserve to be heard, respected and valued.

We are incredibly proud of every individual who spoke. It takes immense courage to stand in front of professionals and organisations and share such personal experiences. Our advocates were there every step of the way, offering support and encouragement.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, took the time to listen and made a pledge. Your commitment to creating positive change means so much, especially for those whose voices are too often unheard.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Solihull Community Development Team for their support in organising the event and for sharing their expertise, knowledge and commitment throughout the day.

Together, we continue to make space for voices that matter most.

A huge thank you to Solihull Moors Football Club and Solihull Moors Foundation for inviting our community group to attend the game as part of the campaign.

For many of our advocacy partners, this was their first ever football match. Due to a lack of confidence and worries about accessibility, attending a live game had never felt possible before.

But what an incredible experience it turned out to be! The atmosphere, the welcome from staff and supporters and the amazing spirit around the ground made it a truly special day for everyone involved.

Moments like this show how powerful inclusive community events can be opening doors to new experiences and helping people feel confident to be part of the world around them.

Thank you again to Solihull Moors F.C. and Solihull Moors Foundation for making our advocacy partners feel so welcome. 💚

No one should feel invisible in their own community.

Nationally, people with learning disabilities and autism are far more likely to experience loneliness and social isolation. Many spend very little time out in their communities and often feel unheard or overlooked.

In Solihull, that’s where Solihull Action through Advocacy (SAtA) makes a real difference.

SAtA supports local people with learning disabilities and autism to:

✨ Build self-advocacy skills.
✨ Grow in confidence and independence.
✨ Understand their rights.
✨ Connect with their community.
✨ Be introduced to the world around them in a safe and supported way.

By empowering people to speak up and make their own choices, advocacy helps reduce isolation and opens doors to friendships, opportunities and belonging.

Because everyone deserves to feel seen, heard and included. 💙

“We honestly couldn’t have done it without you.”

We recently supported a young person to secure a place of her own and the impact has been life-changing.

After navigating challenges and persistence from everyone involved, she has now been offered a beautiful flat in the perfect location close to family and work, with the right support in place to help her thrive.

Her family shared:

“I have never seen her so happy. Thank you for everything you’ve done we truly couldn’t have achieved this without your support.”

Moments like this remind us why advocacy matters. When people are heard, supported and empowered, real change happens.

.From a quiet coffee… to finding her people!

When MS was first referred for support, life felt heavy.

She needed space to breathe, time for her and a way out of some very difficult circumstances.

She told us she loved craft, wanted to get out more and hoped to meet new people but at the time, her social circle was very small.

We started simply.
A coffee. A chat. A safe space to talk.

Then she took a small step and visited one of our drop-ins.
That’s where things began to change.

At Kingshurst BYOC, MS instantly clicked with the group. She joined in with conversations, picked up a deck of Uno (which everyone loves)… and quickly became very good at it. Soon, she was bringing craft activities to share with others, creating moments of laughter, creativity and connection.

In November she mentioned something she’d always wanted to do visit the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC. She’d never been. Others in the group hadn’t either.
So we went together.

That day out became the start of our BYOC Socials supporting each other with travel, spending time together and building confidence along the way. MS was completely in her element.

Her confidence continued to grow. She became a volunteer with SAtA, leading craft sessions at our BYOC Tea Chest group, which were a huge hit. She’s since gone on to run craft activities at two local day services and is now exploring the idea of turning her passion into a business and even training as a Teaching Assistant.

Today, MS is a valued member of the Kingshurst BYOC community. She brings creativity, kindness and sometimes even Teddy, her chihuahua 🐶 She’s made genuine friendships, stays connected through the group WhatsApp and supports others with the same warmth she once needed herself.

Seeing her each week happy, settled and thriving is an absolute joy.

This is what community, connection and belief can do ✨
