Finding the Light Again: DP’s Journey Through the BYOC Project
At Solihull Action through Advocacy, our mission is simple: to ensure no one feels invisible, unheard, or alone.
That mission came to life in an extraordinary way through our Build Your Own Circle (BYOC) project, when we met DP a 66-year-old gentleman living alone with minimal support. What unfolded over the following months has been a powerful reminder of how personalised advocacy and social connection can change a life.
Meeting DP: “Everyone is having fun but I’m not.”
At our first meeting with DP he appeared anxious, withdrawn and unsure of himself. He told us that since lockdown, his world had shrunk. He had no family, very little confidence and didn’t feel like he belonged anywhere. He desperately wanted the things that many of us take for granted: to go out, meet people and just be part of something.
“Everyone is having fun but I’m not,” he said quietly.
Shortly after, a safeguarding concern arose and DP was formally referred to us through the BYOC project. That was the turning point.
Rebuilding Confidence Through Connection
Our approach with DP began with something simple, conversation. We took the time to build trust and understand what mattered to him.
Together, we planned a trip to the barbers and then a night out at a local disco for adults with learning disabilities. DP arrived dressed up and smiling. He loved his haircut, danced freely, sang loudly and had the time of his life.
A member of staff at the disco later emailed us to say how wonderful it was to see him so full of joy.
Health, Healing and Hope
When DP’s health began to interfere with his outings, we arranged support for him to see his GP. With treatment and encouragement, he bounced back and continued to explore the world again visiting shopping centres, going to the park, dropping in on new friends and even going to the pub for a chat.
He started to rediscover old passions, too.
DP is a talented artist. When we first met, he said he had lost his “spark.” Today, he paints portraits, landscapes and even decorated staff cars. With a grin, he tells us:
“It’s back!”
Friendship and the Power of Belonging
DP now regularly attends our BYOC group sessions, where he’s made friends and feels safe. He often says things like:
“I’m in the light, not the dark.”
“I feel all warm inside, not cold and yukky.”
“I feel like I did when my mum was here.”
These moments are powerful reminders of why our work matters.
We’re now supporting DP in gaining confidence to attend places independently, reconnect with his local community, and explore the idea of attending a local day service perhaps even going on a holiday.
Why BYOC Matters
The Build Your Own Circle project is designed to build lasting social networks, encourage self-advocacy, and empower people with learning disabilities and/or autism to live fuller, more connected lives.
DP’s journey shows us how life-changing this support can be.
“You’re on my side,” he said once. “People listen to you and you get things done for me.”
That’s what we’re here to do — to listen, to act and to make sure that no voice goes unheard.
