❀️ Little City is for EVERYONE ❀️

As a Little City UK team, we are always striving to be the very best we can be and look at ways of ensuring we are doing absolutely everything we can to be inclusive and for everyone.

The lovely Suzanne from Suzanne Butler - Independent Speech and Language Therapist attended one of Jen's Little City - Milton Keynes' school sessions and loved what the sessions offered.

Suzanne is a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with 20 years experience of working with babies, toddlers and children, as well as their families and education staff. She works for the NHS for 3 days a week and independently for 2 days a week and has worked in a range of settings over the years, from Special Schools to clinics and peoples homes. She also works with parents, Teaching Assistants, SENCos, nursery staff and Grandparents.

So, as you can see....she knows what she's talking about!

Last night Suzanne taught the Little City team some of the signs that would be beneficial for us to know from Signalong. She explained why it was important to know signs, best practice and then we spent about an hour learning some signs including the different areas in the city, some communication signs, as well as some verbs.

She also taught us our very own Little City sign which is so so cool! ❀️❀️

Suzanne is going to continue working with the Little City team to create some resources for us to use in the city. These resources won't only help those children with speech delay or anyone with communication difficulties but will be useful for everyone to learn to help communicate with those who might not be verbal.

Little City is so much more than a mobile role play set up for little ones. Please know that when you book a session, a LOT goes on behind the scenes to ensure you get the very best we can offer and are always expanding our skills and knowledge ❀️

I will be learning and using a few of the signs in sessions from now on. Its all new to me so bare with me but definitely join in πŸ˜ƒ

Today we used our Easter communication board, made using

What is a communication board? πŸ€”

A communication board is made up of pictures, symbols or photographs that will help a person to express their wants, needs, make comments or express their feelings.

How do I use a communication board?

Your child will need to see you using the board many times before they use it πŸ‘€

Today, we used the board several times...

Amelie couldn't find the eggs, so I pointed to, 'where?' and said, "where?" then, I pointed to 'where?' and 'Easter Eggs' and said "where are the Easter Eggs?'

Amelie was laughing and smiling and having fun, so I pointed to 'fun' and said, "fun" and then "I'm having fun!" 😊

I will be sharing more about communication boards and other types of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) in the coming weeks.

Let me know if you have any questions

How do I use a communication board? πŸ‘†

Your child will need to see you using the board many times before they use it.

Watch your child πŸ‘€ then use the board to comment on what they are doing. For example, if you see your child putting an egg into their basket, you could say, 'put it in the basket' whilst pointing to 'put in' and 'basket'.

If your child is looking for 'more' eggs, you could say, 'more easter eggs?' Whilst pointing to 'more' and 'easter egg' or perhaps, you could say, 'where are the easter eggs?' Whilst pointing to 'where? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ' and 'easter eggs'

I will be sharing more about communication boards and other types of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) in the coming weeks.

I 🩷 signing!

I am a specialist speech and language therapist and a Signalong tutor, so I frequently get to see the huge benefits that signing can have for your child. It really is an amazing way to support your child's communication development.

We will be learning signs as part of our parent/carer group, so please ask if you have any questions or would like to join our first group, starting in April!
