The Soothing Season

The Soothing Season Running workshops to creatively connect you to nature and the seasons. What is art therapy? How does it help? What do I provide?

Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses the relationship between the client, therapist, and art work to explore the client's feelings. Art therapy is a protected title, which means only trained and HCPC registered practitioners can call themselves art therapists or say they provide art therapy. Art therapy is supported by a number of theories, and for me attachment theory, neuroscience, a

nd the self-soothing nature of art-making underlie my practice. Each person may find art therapy helps them in different ways, some of which may be:

- to feel more connected,
- to find out new things about themselves,
- to identify the causes of feelings,
- to connect with early memories,
- to express and process traumatic events

Making art in therapy can give life to feelings, and provide a safe environment to explore this. As a private practitioner I provide a variety of ways to engage with art therapy. I offer individual sessions with adults, young people and children, as well as working with parent and child to strengthen relationships, and group work. There is also some opportunity for creating outdoors. You will be able to use a variety of art materials including paints, pens, pastels, clay, collage, felt making and sewing. You may also decide to use found objects. You may decide there are times you do not want to make art. I work from Commondale, North York Moors, from the village hall. More information:

I was delighted to get this review recently for my Soothing Season workshop. It's so lovely to hear that someone was exploring a new relationship with art.

It also got me thinking about what people think the point of art is. Is it to recreate the thing in front of you accurately? Is it a means of telling a story? Is it a way to reflect your culture or the times you live in? Is it a means to relax and connect to yourself and your environment? Having these important conversations allows you to see art is all of the above and much more.

For me, I focus very much on using art as a means to soothe and open up to yourself and your environment in both my printmaking and my online Soothing Season workshops (click the link below for more info).

For many reasons, it can be hard to be outside as much as you would like. Health, work, weather, and more can make it difficult to be out in nature. But connecting to nature through your imagination and art can allow you to immerse yourself in the many different elements of the natural world.

Did you see the aurora borealis last night? It's such an astounding experience to see the sky light up in reds and greens. Living in the North York Moors, within a dark skies area, we had the perfect view of it.

When you draw something, you really start to notice the little details you might have missed at first glance. It gives you the space to slow down and focus your attention on the shapes and lines in front of you, seeing how they all fit together.

The same thing can happen when you draw from your imagination - you can reveal things about yourself you didn’t notice before. It can help you understand more about your needs and your responses to the world around you. It can open up your choices and reveal new possibilities for the future.

In my online workshops, people often talk about appreciating having this space for themselves and how important that is for their wellbeing. We often don't prioritise ourselves and our own wellbeing.

I'm running two workshops on eventbrite at the moment.

Creative Growth: using art for personal insight, where we use art and visualisation to explore personal obstacles.

The Soothing Season, where we explore a different element of the season using visualisation and art-making.

Today is the autumn equinox, when the day and night are of equal length. And it's the perfect time to be thinking of the balance in your life.

Do you feel your life is a good balance of nurturing activities alongside the harder things in life?

Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine how your days would be this autumn if they were balanced? What would you need more of? What could you do with less of? Imagine making these changes. How would you feel?

We all deserve a life full of nurture, but first, you must imagine it.

Do you find it hard to know what you need? It's always easier to connect to yourself when you allow yourself space in a soothing environment.

Try closing your eyes and imagining being somewhere soothing and spacious in nature and notice how you feel.

Do you feel like everything is moving too fast? Take a moment to stop and look around you. Wherever you are, in the country or the city, beautiful rosehips can be spotted. These shiny red vitamin C filled jewels sing out against their verdant background, calling you to slow for that early autumn peace.
