Alison Murray Massage Therapy

Alison Murray Massage Therapy Massage to help reduce acute or chronic pain, increase range of movement, reduce stress and tension and improve general wellbeing.

I offer massage therapy that not only aims to reduce stress and tension but can also greatly reduce acute and chronic pain and related issues. Therapeutic massage aims to reduce muscle tension caused by overuse, injury and postural imbalances. Massage as a healing technique has stood the test of time. We would be hard pressed to find a culture that has not embraced it for centuries, and for good r

eason - not only is there the power to heal through massage, but it relieves physical, mental and emotional stress and provides instant gratification for the patient through relaxation. Massage can be used on its own to treat many physical and emotional issues as well as in conjunction with other medical therapies. Where patients present with a severe injury or prolonged issue, deep tissue massage may be required. This targets the superficial muscles, deep muscles, and connective tissue. I will assess the issue according to the patient’s verbal description, and through hands-on investigation to ascertain the core problem. It is not uncommon for muscles to react to this treatment in a similar way to strong exercise; there may be slight stiffness for a day or two following the treatment.

💥Discs Don't 'Slip''💥
-
👏🏼 Classic graphic from !
-
Common quotes that can be used regarding back pain and the language used can cause fixed views on prognosis👇🏻:
-
“I’ve had back pain ever since I slipped a disc back when I was 29”
-
“Don’t bend over like that. You'll slip a disc!"
-
“Don’t lift that, it’ll slip your disc!"
-
“I can’t do that. I’ve got a slipped disc”
-
❌ The problems with these statements are that discs DO NOT and CANNOT "slip in and out"
-
⁉️ Can discs get injured? Sure.
-
⁉️ Can discs bulge or herniate? Yep.
-
⁉️ Can discs heal? Absolutely.
-
⁉️ Can you have a bulged disc with no pain and function well? Yes!
-
❓But how strong are discs really?
-
📚 Stemper Et Al. 2010 examined the compressive and tensile strength of thoracic discs in both young and older populations. (28 +/- 8 and 70 +/- 7 years of age respectively)
-
🤯 They found that it takes about 740lbs of force to compress the disc height 1mm in young subjects and 460lbs of force to compress the disc height 1mm in older subjects
-
🧟 Keep in mind this is in cadaveric discs with bony support cut away and no active co-contraction in any surrounding muscle tissue
-
🏋🏻 Obviously, in a normal well-functioning human there is quite a bit of extra strength and stability added by active contractile structures. The conclusion: discs are VERY strong
-
🚨 However, we know that shearing forces are much more likely to injure discs, just as they are more likely to injure ligaments. This is why it is likely not a good idea to lift heavy items off of the ground with end range spinal flexion in a jerking twisting motion
-
💪🏼 However, please be aware that our spinal discs are firmly secured between our vertebrae and can never just slip out

✅ If you have back pain and a healthcare practitioner tells you it's because you ‘slipped a disc’, please do not allow this statement to scare you, as it's not true

Menopause. Every woman goes through it at some point, so why is it so unrecognised and misunderstood?

So many symptoms other than sweats and flushes. Anxiety, palpitations, brain fog, joint aches and pains to name but a few.

Don't suffer in silence and most importantly know you are not alone. Let's raise awareness and support women.

Hoping everyone is keeping well? I've been busy during lockdown. Just moved house and hoping to have a super new massage room up and running by the time I'm allowed to massage again. Also been doing an aromatherapy course online, so will be introducing that upon my return too. Hopefully not too long now.
Have a great weekend! X
