To care for braces at Halloween, avoid hard, sticky, and chewy sweets that can damage them, and stick to softer options like chocolate or peanut butter cups. After eating treats, wait 20minutes before you brush and floss/tepe brush thoroughly, and rinse with water/mouthwash if you can't brush immediately. It's also a good idea to enjoy sweets after a meal, when your mouth produces more saliva to help neutralize acids, and to inspect your braces for any damage afterward. Â
What to eat
Stick to soft sweets;
Choose treats that melt in your mouth, such as plain chocolate, peanut butter cups, or soft baked goods.Â
Cut or break up treats:Â
If you eat something with a firmer texture, break it into small pieces to make it easier to chew and clean.Â
What to avoid
Hard sweets:Â These can break brackets.
Sticky sweets:Â Toffee & caramel can pull at brackets and wires.
Chewy sweets:Â These can bend or loosen wires and brackets
How to maintain oral hygiene
Brush and floss after eating:Â
clean your teeth approximatly 20mins after enjoying sweet treats
Use a travel kit:Â
Carry a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and floss/blue tepe brush to clean your teeth after eating sweet treats
Rinse with water/mouthwash;
you can't brush right away, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water or mouthwash to wash away sugar and acid.Â
Drink water:Â
Stay hydrated with water to help rinse your mouth throughout the day and night.Â
What to do after Halloween
Check your braces:Â
After the festivities, look in a mirror to check for any loose or broken brackets or wires and contact your orthodontist if you notice any damage.Â
