Exciting progress continues across two of our new crematorium developments in the North.

At Vale of York Crematorium & Memorial Gardens, works are progressing well with major milestones achieved, including high-level steel installation, completion of internal birdcage scaffolding in the crematory area, and continued progress across the service yard and car park infrastructure. Roofing works are now underway, with final masonry sections and parapet walls due to commence shortly.

Meanwhile, at Great North Crematorium & Memorial Gardens in Cramlington, strong progress continues on site. Brickwork and blockwork have now reached the third lift, parapet works are complete, and lower-level roof structures have been finished. Landscaping preparations are also advancing, with topsoil spreading and overseeding works underway, alongside additional field drainage improvements.

These developments mark another important step forward in creating thoughtfully designed spaces that will support families and communities for generations to come.

Today is World Bee Day, a chance to celebrate the amazing little insects that do such a big job for our environment 💛

Here at Borders Crematorium, we’re proud to have bee hives within our grounds, helping to support local bees and wildlife. Our gardens and green spaces provide a calm place for nature to thrive and we love spotting the bees busy at work among the flowers.

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” John Muir

By caring for the natural world around us, we help ensure bees remain part of the quiet rhythms of life.

Set within the quiet countryside of the Scottish Borders, the grounds at Borders Crematorium offer a calm place to walk, sit, and remember.

Some families choose to create a small memorial within the grounds, a personal place they can return to, surrounded by familiar views and open space.

If you’d ever like to talk this through, our team is on hand to help.

As Dying Matters Awareness Week comes to a close, we’d like to say a sincere thank you to everyone who has taken a moment to read, reflect, or start a conversation.

Talking about death can feel difficult, but it can also help us better understand life and the importance of compassion, honesty, and caring for one another along the way.

Thank you for being part of these conversations with us 💙

Dying Matters Week is also about remembering.

Sharing stories, holding memories close, laughing, crying, it all matters. Every life leaves a mark, and every farewell is unique.

Today we pause to remember all those who served, sacrificed, and lost their lives during the Second World War and the families whose lives were forever changed.

At Borders Crematorium, we reflect quietly with gratitude, respect, and remembrance.

Grief Has No Rulebook & grief looks different for everyone.

There’s no right way to grieve, no set timeline, and no need to “be strong” all the time. Some days are heavier than others and that’s okay.

💙 If you’re grieving, be kind to yourself
💙 If someone else is grieving, sometimes just being there is enough.

At Westerleigh Group, we believe funerals play a vital role in helping people say a meaningful goodbye.

Our latest research shows that 77% of people feel attending a funeral is essential, and 92% value a personalised service that reflects the life of their loved one. Yet, too many families are left without clear guidance- with 65% receiving little or no direction on final wishes.

This lack of conversation is creating what we describe as a “Great Silence”, placing added pressure on families during an already emotional time.

Funerals are not just ceremonies, they are important moments for connection, reflection and healing. By encouraging more open conversations around death and planning ahead, we can help reduce stress and ensure more meaningful farewells.

Talking about our own funerals might feel uncomfortable but it’s one of the most important conversations we can have.

During Dying Matters Awareness Week, we’re reminded that planning ahead isn’t about being uncomfortable - it’s about care and clarity. When we share our wishes, we ease the burden on the people we love. We give them guidance at a time when emotions can feel overwhelming and we create space for a farewell that truly reflects who we are.

Whether it’s the type of service, music, readings or even just the atmosphere, these conversations help ensure our lives are honoured in a way that feels right. More importantly, they open the door to honest, meaningful discussions about life, death, and what matters most.

It doesn’t have to be a heavy conversation. It can start simply with: “Have you ever thought about what you’d want?”

Let’s normalise talking about dying, a short conversation today, can prevent uncertainty and make things easier for our loved ones later.

01/05/2026

We’re here to support you in saying a heartfelt goodbye, in a way that feels right for you.

Whether that’s through a favourite song, a shared story, a love of football, or even a gentle moment of laughter, we’ll help you create a service that feels personal and meaningful.

In partnership with SAIF independent funeral directors, each farewell can be as unique as the life it honours.

When you’re ready, you can speak to your local independent funeral director to begin the conversation.

Progress continues across our new crematoria developments, with positive momentum at both Vale of York Crematorium and Great North Crematorium in Cramlington.

At Vale of York Crematorium & Memorial Gardens, works are progressing well with continued advancement of both external and internal masonry. Scaffold lifts are ongoing as the structure develops, while preparation works above formation level for service yards and the access road are moving forward. BT diversion and alteration works are also underway, supporting the next phase of infrastructure on site.

At Great North Crematorium & Memorial Gardens, Cramlington, strong progress has been made as brickwork and blockwork move through the second lift, with scaffolding lifted to allow roofing works to begin. External works are advancing well, alongside landscaping preparations, including bund dressing and topsoil spreading ahead of the Spring seeding plan. Within the Memorial Garden, border and stonework to pathways are taking shape, and works to the lower-level roof have now commenced.

It is encouraging to see both sites developing well, with key milestones being reached across construction, infrastructure and landscaping. We look forward to sharing further updates as these projects continue to progress.

18/04/2026

We welcome the Health Secretary’s announcement that the Department of Health and Social Care will lead the development of regulation for the funeral industry in England and Wales.

At Westerleigh Group, we remain committed to upholding the highest standards for the families we serve. We look forward to working closely with our industry partners to help ensure these regulations deliver consistent quality, strong compliance and compassionate care for families across the country.
