"Acupuncture is widely known for its effectiveness in the treatment of pain. Its unique role in reducing suffering in patients experiencing pain is one of the main reasons it has become so popular around the world. The research is plentiful on the effects of acupuncture on specific painful conditions, as can be seen throughout this website. For acute pain, a systematic review of 13 trials found that acupuncture was more effective than both sham needling and injection with painkillers."

Another study in the journal, Current Opinion in Anesthesiology, in the paper titled ‘Acupuncture for Chronic Pain: an Update and Critical Overview’ concluded that “mounting evidence supports the effectiveness of acupuncture to treat chronic low back, neck, shoulder, and knee pain, as well as headaches. Additional data are emerging that support the use of acupuncture as an adjunct or alternative to opioids, and in perioperative settings.”

Borders Acupuncture & Massage

Acupuncture is one of the branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine which has been developed and practised for over 2000 years. It follows the principle that the smooth flow of qi (energy) throughout the body is essential for good health. If this flow is disrupted in any way, pain or illness may occur.

Acupuncture works by accessing points along the pathways (meridians) of qi to correct the flow. It is an holistic practice which aims to treat the root of health problems by seeing the whole person and so it can be effective for a wide range of conditions.

Tui Na uses massage techniques, instead of needles, to correct the flow of qi in the body. Treatment is relaxing and restorative; a gentle massage, focusing on a quieter approach to body work but with deep long lasting effects.

The massage concentrates on the effected area but will involve the whole body, working along the pathways of energy. Acupuncture points are also used, applying pressure instead of needles.
