Thank you to all the staff who attended the home today. I would like to pass on my best wishes and gratitude to everyone who came. I am sure families and friends will join me in thanking the staff who made the place everything it was.
I have written below a personal statement, thinking it far more appropriate to conclude by celebrating everything we did well 🤍
I thought it only right to say some words that I think truly reflect the story of this home.
When I look at the empty corridors now it is very sad to acknowledge this building’s heart stopped beating when the people who gave it life had to leave.
A home once filled with joy, (despite the nature of the industry) gave more hope than it took. To me, this place was safe and strong, I thought of this home as a fortress. Not because of a locked door, but because I knew the power inside this building was unrivaled.
I always considered the nurse in charge to be some sort of superhero capable of slaying any dragon or paramedic who arrived with a bad attitude. (yes there were a few!)
The unique potion that we manufactured every day consisted of a little fun, companionship and security. This was available here on tap. The staff would arrive in the morning with their hustle and bustle, ‘lets get everyone up and ready for breakfast’. How many cups of tea and biscuits must have been consumed here? I will never know!
Lunches, puddings and more cups of tea, if a home could run on tea alone, we would have aced it.
The afternoon lull, the countdown clock ticking down until we heard
the 4 and 5 letter words, ooh you got a 6? Well done! Then tea-time in the lounge, triangle sandwiches, experimental soup and guess what, gallons more tea. Puddings hiding in the fridge not wanting to be found (until the next morning) and then the night-time guardians who would arrive like a whisper and deliver everyone safely to bed and watch over them all night.
Everyone had their place, the system worked, it clunked along like an old brass band played by a magician, and somehow we got a tune out of it. With a touch of anticipation and a dash of dedication our residents were loved and cherished. Their families became our family over the years and sometimes we were the family when there were no loved ones left.
One day the wind changed and blew the rainclouds our way. We used every spell and charm at our disposal to clear them away but nothing worked and the clouds came to stay. I am ashamed to say that we could not match your energy and we could not stand and fight the organisations who had come to take away our light.
For every door that closes a new door opens, not always straight away and might take some knocking, but all of you here have qualities that shine like diamonds which will not stay shaded for long. Embrace the ‘what ifs’ and the ‘what nexts’ as this is all part of the song. Be the star of the show, start a new staring role, and give the very best of yourself like you did at Waltham Hall.
Thank you to everyone who has come today, it was never that we gave up on you all, but this became impossible to save, I know you all realise this, and I thank you for sticking with us and being loyal to the end.
