Byw'n Llawn / Living Fully - North Wales Mindfulness and Cancer

Byw'n Llawn / Living Fully - North Wales Mindfulness and Cancer Mindfulness courses have been offered in North Wales since 2001. Byw'n Llawn / Living Fully has been set up to continue this work.

Alaw ward, Ysbyty Gwynedd was the first hospital to offer mindfulness to oncology patients in the UK. Funded by The Alaw Endowment Fund and Team Irfon, our aim is to help people who have had a diagnosis of cancer to Live Fully by developing Mindfulness skills. Having had a diagnosis of cancer, there may well be times when we have difficult experiences and emotions, feel anxious about the future a

nd feel low in mood. A mindfulness practice helps us to be fully present and aware of what is happening right here and now. Without Mindfulness training, we tend to be in ‘automatic pilot’ much of the time. We might be driving down the road whilst at the same time worrying about something in the future or drifting back to memories of the past. This is very normal but can be unhelpful for it often makes things worse. With Mindfulness training we learn to approach experiences whether ‘good’ ‘bad’ or ‘neutral’ with curiosity and openness. With practice this helps us to be able to manage difficult experiences with more steadiness

Research has shown that mindfulness reduces levels of anxiety and depression, improves sleep and increases levels of wellbeing. We teach 8 week Mindfulness courses fully funded, to people who have a diagnosis of Cancer and have been diagnosed or treated in Alaw Ward. MBCT for Cancer was developed as a specific programme for people with cancer by Trish Bartley, an experienced and senior Mindfulness Teacher and herself an Alaw Ward patient twice. Since 2001 hundreds have benefited from the courses in Bangor. Various small scale research projects have taken place which adds to well- established world wide evidence that mindfulness reduces levels of depression, depressive symptoms, anxiety and sleep difficulties in people with cancer and improves levels of wellbeing and optimism. MBCT for Cancer is now taught widely in the UK and internationally

Good morning all. I woke up to things outside my control and veering off plan. A friend told me of a Japanese study to write down my emotions and shred or tear the scribbles as the research indicates that this action enables people to let go of the negative emotions of frustration, anger, fear etc far better than if the scribbles are kept to one side or left in a journal. The action of letting go.

I've also been introduced to a "To be list".

Today, I've vented my frustrations on paper, shredded those thoughts and cleared my mind to write my "To Be List" before I write my "To Do List".

Today I am going to BE:
Calm
Kind

I invite you to think about what you would like to BE today. Your list can comprise one action or a few to suit your needs and times throughout the day.

Happy BEING mindful.

Hello to you all our followers. I'm new on the admin team for Facebook. I'm Shazz and I have been thinking of setting myself a weekly theme for my mindfulness using the 9 attitudes of mindfulness:
nonjudging,
gratitude,
patience,
a beginner's mind,
trust,
non-striving,
acceptance,
letting go,
gratitude
generosity.

I tend to use very short solo practices throughout my day. Today's inspiration came as I midfully waited for my kettle to boil. I let go of the need for the kettle to boil quickly so I could make my cuppa.

I decided my theme for my short practices: coming to the breath, standing in mountain or sitting is "Letting Go". Does anyone fancy joining me on my quest?

Maybe you have a favourite pairing of mindful practice and theme?
If you do, please let me know and we can share and explore different ideas.

Whatever you're doing, however you're feeling may you feel some ease, know you're loved and experience kindness either by giving or receiving.
