It’s Mental Health Awareness Week this week so I wanted to share how acupuncture can support your mental and emotional well-being.

I have a special interest in supporting mental health and well-being and so I treat a lot of patients in clinic for anxiety, stress, and low mood. I also see a lot of patients who are overwhelmed and perhaps feel they’ve lost their sense of self a bit (often associated with perimenopause).

Acupuncture works wonders and it’s such a joy for me to be able to help people to feel better and to start living life to the full again. But how does it work?
💚calms the nervous system
💚activates the vagus nerve to support gut/brain axis
💚balances your hormones (eg. cortisol, serotonin, GABA)
💚allows a gentle release of emotions you may be holding on to

This week is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, a time when we focus on the support available at this crucial time of life

So many new mums struggle during pregnancy or in the first year after birth and it’s no wonder! We’re often sleep deprived, physically and emotionally exhausted, and our hormones are going bonkers!

From a Chinese medicine point of view, this is a time when we’re particularly vulnerable, our bodies have been depleted through the effort of pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. We need looking after nourishing, nurturing and supporting. Yet so often this isn’t the case and it can leave us struggling or feeling isolated and alone.

Compassion and connection are so important at this time, so if you’re a new mum please don’t struggle alone. There’s lots of support available, from a lovely group for a chat and sharing experiences, to counselling, physiotherapy and acupuncture of course.

And if you know someone who has recently had a baby, I encourage you to reach out, check in, and give them whatever support you can. It takes a village after all!

Awareness Week and as it’s still Stress Awareness
Month, I wanted to talk about stress and fertility and
set the record straight on a few things!

Fertility struggles are stressful! It’s a fact and it’s
important to acknowledge that finding it stressful (and
all the other emotions too) is ok, it’s human. So
remember, you deserve compassion and understanding
from those around you and, perhaps most importantly,
from yourself.
