Back to Basics: Putting the THINKING component back into orienteering

On Monday evening, I had the privilege of hosting a performance psychology webinar to over 70 curious orienteers. We looked into the following topics:

β€’ Performance mindset
β€’ Mindfulness + focus
β€’ Self-talk
= CONTRIBUTING TO A SUCCESSFUL RACE

After the 40 min presentation there was an excellent 20 min Q+A that enhanced the session with quality questions being raised.

If your club or organisation is looking for an online webinar session that can be tailored to your needs, then please feel free to get in touch.

Have a great evening,
Rachel 🌸

Who can relate to this?

I saw this quote and immediately thought of the difference when someone listens to me wanting to understand vs. just wanting to reply.

Although sharing experiences / giving advice can be super helpful, remember to listen first. How we feel or experience the world is all different πŸ₯° try to make people feel heard and understood πŸ€—

That's certainly what my role as the therapist allows me to do for my clients 😌😊

Have a wonderful day 🩡

Let's break it down:

πŸ“±On average, people spend 2 hours on social media a day (Statista, 2022). πŸ•‘

πŸ“±Social media can enhance mental wellbeing as a facilitator for social connections and peer support (Naslund et al., 2020). πŸ«‚

πŸ“± Rewarding social interactions and humor provided by social media helped reduce stress during the COVID-19 pandemic (Marciano et al., 2022). πŸ˜‚

πŸ“±Another study have found that social media may lead to body image dissatisfaction (Harrier et al., 2023). πŸ₯Ί

πŸ“± Excessive use increases level of loneliness, fear of missing out and decreases well-being (Valkenburg 2022).

My tips:
πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Recognise how social media makes YOU feel, during screen time and afterwards
πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Recognise what drives you to use social media (is it coming with a positive intention or not?)
πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Limit screen time to connect with yourself more
πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Limit use or avoid use before bedtime to help get that quality sleep

For help with social media addiction or procrastination, feel free to get in touch ☺️

Let's see what the research says about strength training and mental health πŸ’ͺ🏼🧠:

1️⃣ Decreases in anxiety after both single-bout sessions and long-term training (Strickland & Smith 2014).

2️⃣ Woman have greater self-acceptance and hold themselves in a more positive self-regard (Hall & Nonaan, 2023).

3️⃣ One session a week helps protect against depression, 2-3 sessions a week lower anxiety and depressive symptoms (Shannon, Shevlin et al., 2023).

4️⃣ Women’s mental focus and emotional resilience needed to cope with adversity enhances (Marella, 2023).

5️⃣ Self-confidence, capability and navigating difficult challenges all improved (Aulak, 2020).

The science speaks for itself πŸ”¬πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ’»
For any extra support needed, e.g., motivation or barriers to exercising, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Happy training πŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Before:
My alarm goes off, I put on one snooze, I get super cozy again, my alarm goes off, I turn it off and to wake myself up I pick up my phone. Now I always have it on 'do not disturb' so I don't turn that off until I get up BUT I would look at the weather, Garmin connect, sometimes even the news. I'd then eventually get up and I had no conscious awareness of my outlook for the day.

Now:
1. I don't look at my phone until I'm up, outside of the bedroom.
2. I set an intention for the day during that 5 minute snoozed cosy time.

My intention for example this morning was - 'gently productive' > which to me means being productive with intentional breaks throughout the day. πŸ–₯️

These simple changes have allowed me to start my day as I intend, before technology or others distract me. It allows me to consciously decide how I can show up for the day - depending on my sleep quality, my mood, my energy levels. Lastly, it has a lasting effect throughout the day so I'm truly connected to myself and my needs.

Give it a go and I'd love to hear what it does for you 🀩

Have an intentionally great day,
Rachel 🌸
