Yoga tends to be more about how we do things rather than what we do. As is commonly stated by its various gurus. Here's my interpretation of how we do those things, so that we can call what we do yoga. Using the Patanjali Shastra model of the eight limbs (ashtanga). Would love to hear your thoughts ✌️♥️

The Yamas and Niyamas are the foundational qualities required to reach the other states of yoga. They outline the rules of engagement for our yoga practice. According to this structure we need to embody the qualities of Yama and Niyama for the other limbs to arise within us.

The Atlas bone is the first bone in your neck, upon which your skull rests. Named after the Greek God who held the World upon his shoulders 🌍

It’s responsible for the movement of nodding, or extension and flexion. In combination with the Axis bone beneath it, it facilitates rotation. Also known as C1, it’s the one that makes the loud click at the chiropractors 😯

Have a little feel & play with your Atlas today 💀👀

It certainly does help… coming from somebody who’s riddled with arthritis. When I start taking lessons again I may focus on helping those with arthritis and spinal conditions. As I’ve lived with these myself from my early twenties and have navigated my self-practice to manage these conditions.

Who else would like help in managing arthritis and spinal conditions through movement and mindfullness?

Arthritis is a painful condition that affects our joints. Movement is key, and yoga for arthritis is a gentle way to relieve joint pain.

YOGA NIDRA or BODY SCAN - often used as a technique for embodied relaxation. Referred to as 'rotation of the consciousness, to withdraw the senses from external stimuli (pratyahara). Taking our brain into the Theta (wave) state of consciousness. Perhaps a method derived from the ta***ic practice of Nyasa. For me, this is where the process of yoga as a self-enquiry begins. Yoga does not happen within the realms of the ordinary mind where attachments, striving and ego dominate.

Next time you drop into a deep relaxed state from this technique, why not try another trip around the body, focussing on the felt sense of your bones, joints and muscles. Maybe a round for each. What can you discover about yourself from a bodily inquiry of proprioception? Give it a go.. It may take some practice but this is where your yoga journey begins 🙏
