🦷 NHS Dentistry in Wales is Changing – Here’s What You Need to Know

From 1st April a new system is being introduced across Wales that will change how NHS dental care works.

Instead of the current banding system (Bands 1, 2 and 3) treatment will be based on your individual needs and how complex your care is. The focus is shifting more towards prevention and prioritising patients who need urgent or more involved treatment.

For those who pay charges are also changing. Patients may be asked to contribute up to 50% of treatment costs with a maximum charge of £384 per course of treatment.

You may also find that routine check-ups are not as frequent as before as recall intervals will depend on your oral health risk rather than a fixed schedule.

While costs may increase under the new system many people will still be entitled to free NHS dental care including children, pregnant women, and individuals on certain benefits.

If you’re currently an NHS dental patient it’s important to be aware that both access to care and pricing may look different going forward.
