Today is World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day, also known as COPD.
Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist, Kirsty, and Hannah from Pulmonary Rehabilitation, are on site today at Prince Charles Hospital, raising awareness of COPD, the importance of medication for COPD and the services that are supporting patients across the Cwm Taf Morgannwg region.
But, what is COPD? COPD is a lung condition that happens when your lungs become inflamed and damaged and your airways narrow. COPD makes it harder for air to move in and out of your lungs, so you become breathless.
COPD is a common condition with approximately 1.7 million people living with it in the UK. It is progressive, meaning it gets worse over time.
The symptoms of COPD are:
- breathlessness - This often comes on gradually and gets worse over time. It means you might feel breathless while doing things you used to be able to do easily, like walking quickly or going uphill
-a cough that lasts a long time or goes away and comes back
-coughing up a lot of phlegm
-frequent chest infections
-wheezing
If you have symptoms, please see your GP and think, could this be COPD?
