🎄Breastfeeding at Christmas 🤱🏾
It’s common over the busy period to experience a number of breastfeeding problems such as blocked milk ducts, mastitis, baby weight loss and a drop in milk supply.
This is because we’re busy getting ready and spending more time with family and friends. Opportunities to feed your baby can be missed, which means less milk for baby. When milk is not removed from your breasts as often, your body slows down production.
✨ Here are our top tips for avoiding breastfeeding problems this Christmas:
🎄 Look out for early feeding cues - it can be tempting to rock a hungry or unsettled baby to sleep when in company, but being tuned into early signs of hunger will help you to make sure your baby doesn’t miss opportunities to feed
🎄 Offer both breasts at every feed - this helps you to give your baby has as much milk as possible at every feed. It will also help to keep your breasts soft and comfortable, avoiding blocked milk ducts or a drop in milk supply
🎄 Offer your breast for comfort as well as for hunger. Meeting lots of new people can be unsettling for new babies. You are the perfect source of comfort for your baby - they love to be close to you and to suckle for comfort
🎄 Offer the breast for YOUR comfort, as well as your baby’s - if your breasts feel firm and full, a message is sent to your body to slow down production which can lead to reduced milk supply. It will also help to avoid blocked milk ducts and mastitis
🎄 Avoid wearing tightly fitting clothes or bras with padding or underwires. These can press into your breast tissue, causing blocked ducts and mastitis
Remember:
🎁 They are YOUR baby - well meaning family and friends might offer their experience and advice. Trust your instincts and make decisions that feel comfortable for YOU.
🎁 Christmas can be overwhelming for you too. Be kind to yourself and set boundaries for any visitors
🎁 It is impossible to over-feed a breastfed baby or spoil babies with too much many cuddles
🎄Hold them
🎄Feed them
🎄Comfort them
… and have a wonderful first Christmas with your new baby 🌟
