Today we are sharing the experience of OD practitioner Sharon Castle-Rees on her apprenticeship experience.

Sharon said: “I began the Ixion level 5 in coaching to learn the skills necessary to become an effective coach. The apprenticeship route has been a great experience.

“I have been part of a cohort of colleagues from our organisation who have shown great motivation, support and respect for one another and it has been great for developing relations with colleagues in departments that I would not otherwise have met.”

Sharon felt the course was welcoming and rewarding, with a supportive tutor who helped develop and improve her skills and helped further her career ambitions.

Speaking of why the apprenticeship route was right for her, Sharon said: “I believe that the apprenticeship route has given me the opportunity to practice my coaching skills and bolstered my confidence. It has empowered me to push forward and support individuals and teams in my organisation to be able to realise their own potential.”

The simulation team supported an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) anatomy, pathophysiology and examination skills session for resident doctors in general practice. The session was led by Miss Sunjata Kundu, ENT Consultant from County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and supports the delivery of general practice ENT curriculum. Using task trainers, the session gives our doctors ‘hands on’ clinical experience which simulate lifelike common ENT conditions seen within general practice, this helps to improve patient care.
