The Prime Minister has announced new rules to help us all protect ourselves and others from a new variant of COVID-19 called Omicron.
The Omicron variant has extensive mutations from previous versions of the virus so we need to take urgent measures to protect ourselves from it.
UK scientists are working hard to find out more about the new variant. In the meantime, we must all follow new guidelines to help slow its spread:
Face coverings

New COVID-19 rules on wearing face coverings in England will go ahead from tomorrow, 30 November.

Face coverings must be worn in shops and other similar businesses such as banks, post offices and personal care venues like hairdressers, as well as on public transport. This is enforceable by law and people face fines if they do not follow the rules.
People with certain medical conditions are exempt.
Travel
The Government is also bringing in measures to prevent new cases from abroad.

All travellers arriving into the country from 4am on Tuesday 30 November will be required to take a PCR test on day 2 and self isolate until they have received a negative test result. These PCR tests can be purchased from private providers.

A number of countries have been added to the red list. UK residents arriving from these countries must isolate in a government-approved facility for 10 days. During their stay, they will be required to take a coronavirus test on day 2 and day 8.
Isolation rules
If you come into contact with someone who tests positive with a suspected case of Omicron you will also have to self-isolate for ten days, even if fully vaccinated.
The new measures on our borders, self-isolation and face coverings will be reviewed in three weeks.
Vaccines
We have good reasons for believing booster vaccines will provide some protection from the new variant so it is important that everyone who is eligible for vaccines or a booster jab get them as soon as possible.
You can book online and join the 17 million people who have already had a booster or third jab.

By practising key safer behaviours and actions, we can continue to protect ourselves and others and help reduce the virus spreading.

Please encourage people in your community to follow these behaviours and actions that include: Wash your hands regularly; Test regularly; Stay at home when you feel unwell; Download and use the COVID-19 NHS App.

Ensuring these protections are a part of our everyday behaviours will control transmission of the virus.

The details of the Prime Minister’s announcement are online. There is also a version of his announcement on YouTube with BSL. Please share these links with your networks.

To update you on the current picture, Middlesbrough’s rate is 284 per 100,000 of our population as of today.
The rate is remaining fairly steady at the moment.

The main advice remains to:
- Encourage each other to be vaccinated as soon as they are eligible for first, second or booster jabs
- To take regular lateral flow tests to help identify positive cases
- To wear face coverings when in crowded or enclosed public spaces
- To open windows regularly when meeting people indoors.
- Keep hands clean and use sanitiser.

Teesside University and Middlesbrough Council are currently running a study looking at COVID recovery. You have told us your experiences over the last year and now we’re interested in what you think is needed most in your community as we look to the future, and about how you feel about any potential return to ‘normal’ and how you feel this should be managed: including issues such as vaccinations, social distancing and public spaces.
We are also keen to know how you have coped through the pandemic and how you feel this may have affected you. The study includes a survey and interviews, and you can choose which of these you would like to take part in, or both if you want to.

1.Latest advice on vaccinating young people and children aged 12 – 15: updated 3 November 2021
On 22 September, following a recommendation from the UK’s four Chief Medical Officers, the NHS began to vaccinate healthy children aged 12 to 15 in schools against Covid-19.

The NHS used a tried and tested model, working with and through the school aged immunisation services (SAIS) that provide other vaccines such as flu in schools.

Since we first began vaccinating school-aged children, more than half a million have been protected in this way, the equivalent of more than one out of five. As infection rates and school absences due to Covid-19 continue to affect this group, offering extra protection for them and their families remains an important priority for the NHS.

Since Saturday 23 October 2021, 12-15 year olds have also been able to book a vaccination outside of school if they prefer, using the National Booking Service. This has made it even easier for them to get protection by opening up hundreds of convenient, established sites across the country such as vaccination centres and designated GP practices and community pharmacies.
To make an appointment, they need simply to visit www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination or call 119.
And, from the last weekend of October (30-31), they are now able to get vaccinated at a growing number of walk-in sites in every English region. Sites need to put extra measures in place to offer vaccinations to 12-15s so this is not every site, but new sites will be added regularly to www.nhs.uk/grab-a-jab.
Covid-19 vaccines will continue in schools too – if a child has already been invited through their school, their family could choose to be vaccinated that way or alternatively, book an appointment out of school through the national booking service or choose to use walk-in service. The NHS just wants to make it as easy as possible for children and their families to get this extra protection, quickly and conveniently, from the half-term holidays.

If you live in England and are aged 16 or over, you can find a walk-in coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination site to get a COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment.

Attached are the latest data slide on Middlesbrough’s Covid rate.

The infection rate has increased dramatically to 216 per 100,000.

We are encouraging people to remember the basics of social distancing and wearing face coverings when required.

Anyone with symptoms should book a test by calling 119 or by visiting www.nhs.uk/coronavirus.

Separately, regular free tests are available to all adults. The lateral flow tests can help to identify positive cases when people aren’t displaying symptoms. Details of how to access the tests are available via www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/lfd-test.

We would appreciate shares of the slide and associated messages through your networks.

Finally, the below link contains a video produced in association with Streets Ahead in Gresham and the council’s locality working team. It features a range of people talking about why they had the vaccine. Thanks to everyone who was involved. It may be useful for sharing among networks to show how many people from all walks of live are being vaccinated.
